Ren was magically bound to people who were supposed to be his allies, so he simply broke those enchantments. In doing so, he lost the ability to form attachments to others. He is marked by what was done to him, and by his escape. He acts cheerful and cannot rid himself of that facade, even when fighting or facing painful memories.

He takes vindictive pleasure in the fact that his ability to fall in love was not stolen from him; that he never had to begin with.
