Kalama's mom was a human Maui native that specialized in metalworking. She was adventurous, and as such decided to hike along the interior of the Haleakalā one fine afternoon.
Normally, hiking in that area of Haleakalā is prohibited due to recent volcanic hazard development. In the crater of Haleakalā lived a great dragon of the same name, who burrowed extensively across his domain. These burrows caused the ground to collapse and, on some occasions, lava to spill out and put residents of Maui at risk. The people of Maui didn't believe in the existence of a dragon in the volcano's crater (considering that the area was dangerous to explore and the great dragon spent much of his time underground),so it was a surprise to Malia Iona when she finally stumbled upon the beast.
Haleakalā wasn't friendly by any conventional definition, but he wasn't outright aggressive to the young explorer. Over a period of many years, the two became closer, eventually getting married (not legally, but that didn't matter to them) and having a child by the name of Kalama.
It was difficult to raise Kalama, as Haleakalā never left the house of the sun (the name they referred to the volcano by, to prevent confusion between the earthly structure and its inhabitant) and Kalama and Malia could only thrive near civilization. Kalama and Malia spent most of their time in the town of KeoKea in a one-story house, visiting Haleakalā on the weekends when they could.
Growing up, Kalama spent a lot of time engaging in sports and other physical activities. He had a few friends through most of school, and while he faced a lot of discrimination based on his looks, he tried not to let it bother him too much. 'Tried' is the keyword there. Kalama had an extensive anger and aggression problems in his younger years due to his father's blood. He would "blow up" at the smallest of annoyances, sometimes hurting those around him. He also made bad friends and developed a drinking issue, one time needing hospitalization due to poisoning. Over the course of a few years, he was aided by a therapist and extensive anger management classes to deal with his issues.
Kalama still has the occasional relapse when it comes to his short temper, though he has not yet picked up alcohol since leaving Maui. He spent time in a college in San Jose before dropping out and moving to Fresno. He currently works at a welding shop with Jules. Kal eventually met his boyfriend, Pavel, by being way too chatty to a group of friends at a bowling alley.
