ABOUT

Gabriel is an interesting figure. No one knows his true intentions or his origins. He has taken on many names, identities, and titles— Few people have been able to keep track of him due to this. At any given moment at any location, there is bound to be someone who recognizes him, yet most can’t quite place the source of the familiarity. He is well-known in certain circles as someone with an array of connections and extravagant wealth, though most of these assumptions were created from half truths and lies. Very few people know him beyond the facade that he broadcasts to the world, and even fewer know his story. Whispers, theories, and rumors circulate, but the truth seems as though it will remain out of reach forever.

Gabriel is well aware of the way people perceive him, and he uses this to his advantage. He is manipulative, cunning, and deliberate. Having lived for hundreds of years, he hardly views himself as human, having no problem treating others like pawns and taking advantage of them.

BACKGROUND

PRE IMMORTALITY

Gabriel was born to a poor family, with two siblings. They were farmers, barely managing to get by. Gabriel was miserable most of the time, as were his siblings. His life was far from desirable and death seemed to be the only release, despite how much he dreaded the fateful day his life would end. Eventually, his family got sick. One by one. Slowly. They were too weak to work, including him. It only took one death, one of his siblings, for him and the rest of his family to grow desperate. They were weak, having fallen sick before him, but he still had strength left. He used the last of it to pray to any deity who would hear his pleas and save him from his own mortality. It was a selfish desire but it was one he wouldn’t stop reaching for until his final breath, even if it meant the rest of his weak and sickly family would die off before him. His will to live won over flimsy morals.

MEETING THE ENTITY

Eventually, to his shock, a deity heard his prayers and presented him with a contract. The deity of time, unnamed and unknown. Deities had been worshiped for ages, but no one could confirm if the mythical contracts they provided to humans were real or not. Gabriel achieved this by believing wholeheartedly in any deity who could save him, prevent him from losing his life in such a pitiful way. The entity answered his prayers, granting him a deal. The only price was his loyalty. At the time, he was willing to give up nearly all of his free will to the entity because his desperation was strong.

POST IMMORTALITY

After this, Gabriel went back. The symptoms of his sickness continued, but they were never as severe as those of his family members. He watched as they all died off. It happened fast. He wondered if his blessing had been granted just a few days later, if he would even be well enough to accept it. Most people in his village died off soon after, leaving only a few. Of course, Gabriel looked suspicious, having survived with only minimal symptoms. He claimed it was just luck. Few believed him, but after the sickness ravaged the village, even fewer had the energy to focus on such a minute detail as the immunity of a peasant boy. Despite his willingness to basically let his family die, he never held any true resentment towards them. He doesn’t, and never has, hated them. Gabriel is and has always been the kind of person who doesn’t value friendship, family, or really any personal relationships. He is quick to turn on, scam, and cheat those who he considers close. With that being said, he definitely doesn’t like them either.

Gabriel was quick to leave his village behind. There was nothing there for him anyways, and the deity who had blessed him convinced him to leave and devote his full attention to his group.

THE ENTITY'S CULT

Gabriel didn’t have much time to process everything that had happened since he agreed to the Entity’s contract. He was almost immediately dragged into the small cult the Entity had created. It consisted of twelve humans and the Entity. Every person in the group was gifted the same blessing— Immortality. They had each come from an undesirable background; Entity took advantage of people who would be more likely to turn against their own species and have no qualms about doing so. The deity’s motivations were revealed quickly; He sought to bring about the complete destruction of humanity. Despite his deep hatred of humans, he used them to his advantage, using empty promises and manipulation to trick them into believing in his so-called noble cause. Gabriel was never too deeply involved with the Entity’s goal. He did what he was told, of course, and he did it well, showcasing just how far he was willing to go to impress the Entity. Entity took notice of this, silently declaring Gabriel as his most loyal follower. He was entrusted with more tasks and information than the others, and at first, this set him apart from them. He was aware of this and it made him want to do even more to keep his status as the favorite. One benefit of this was the way this changed his contract; It was a lot more relaxed than the others, vaguely defined. Deep down, he knew this would be the key to his escape if he ever built up the confidence, and he was sure the Entity knew that too.

Gabriel grew to be friends with the rest of the members as time passed, even considering a few of them to be his closest friends. Gabriel had no problem seeing a group of murderers as his closest friends— After all, he was no better. His younger self would probably feel immense disappointment, watching his older counterpart throw away whatever remaining morals he had in favor of feeling like he belonged. He was closest to Avelina and Rigel. Gabriel and Rigel were actually together for a majority of their time there.

BETRYAL

Despite how strong his friendships were with everyone in the cult initially, over time cracks began to form. He found himself despising the Entity and the way he would treat him. He no longer needed to hide in the deity’s shadow, fully confident in his own abilities. He no longer needed a goal or a justification, especially not one he had never felt strongly about. Everyone in the cult, including Rigel and Avelina, never had his best interests in mind. Everyone there had their own goals and motivations, and most of them were determined to stay complacent by the Entity’s side. He knew he wouldn’t feel guilty if he went against them— It was just survival.

Gabriel began devising a plan to overthrow the Entity. This was an achievable goal— The immortality the Entity had granted him all those years ago provided him with a loophole. Mortals couldn’t kill deities. He was human, yes, but mortal? Not exactly. This was a plan that would take several years to come to fruition completely, and he was patient. When the time was right in his eyes, he slaughtered the Entity. It was a quick fight, though it could barely be considered a fight. It was almost like, deep down, the Entity had been waiting for a moment like this. This didn’t go down well with the rest of the Entity’s cult. Feeling almost nothing for what he had just done, he got rid of them too. Killing the Entity had been one thing, but standing face to face with the people he had once considered his closest friends was more difficult than he could have anticipated. He shrugged off his hesitation, pushing away the memories in favor of completing his plan. The only person he couldn’t kill was Rigel. He hid the true reason for this— His inability to look past the feelings he once held for him— and threatened to find Rigel and kill him if he didn’t give up. Rigel believed him, giving in and leaving.

Gabriel knew that killing the Entity and his cult members would end up meaning nothing in the long run. The deity of time would be reborn. Being as powerful of a deity as it was, the Entity’s successor would likely hold a large portion of the Entity’s memory. No amount of blood spilled would ever prevent that. Part of him was horrified at what he had done once the weight of it hit, but he quickly recovered. It had to be done. They were a hindrance, and they always would be. They would have done the same to him. Their friendship was a lie. He was just the first to break free from the Entity’s control.

Gabriel quickly disappeared after that. Rigel never saw him again, and to Rigel’s knowledge, Gabriel never saw him. He was wrong. Occasionally, Gabriel would manage to track him down and watch him from afar. He stopped doing this after a little while. Feelings fade with time, after all.

DEAL WITH CONTRACT DEITY

A little while after he killed the Entity and his group, Gabriel began to get paranoid. His contract with the Entity had expired with the deity’s death, but his immortality hadn’t disappeared. The Entity made sure of that when he first proposed his contract to Gabriel. It was a punishment, and a permanent one. He would never admit it, but he felt anxious without a real contract. He managed to talk his way into making a deal with the deity of contracts. His way of achieving his own form of godhood— He would live forever, and now he would have a way to mimic the contract abilities that deities possessed. The deities weren’t exactly happy with his cheating of the system— In most cases, a human with a long lasting contract shouldn’t be able to make another contract, but Gabriel was able to bend the rules as he usually did.
Despite the obvious dismay of many other deities, the contract deity had long since taken a liking to Gabriel. After all, that is the only reason why he was able to make the deal.

MEETING LILLIAN

LoremA few years after making his new contract and killing the Entity, Gabriel met Lillian. She was the founder of an up and coming law firm. It was new, gaining popularity as her reputation began to form. No one could have predicted just how successful she would be, but Gabriel had a feeling she would be. She was an interesting character; Someone so obsessed with power and money she was almost blind to everything else. She was calculated, but so reckless at the same time. The two got along well, and they made a deal to partner up. Gabriel finally had something to fall back on— Lillian’s money, her connections, and a place to stay.

The two stayed friends for many years. Their partnership was secretive for most of those years, Gabriel acting behind the scenes as he built up reputations for the many facades he created. Lillian only grew in popularity, and along with that, she just became richer and richer. She got involved in more shady business, with the help of Gabriel.

Their friendship ended due to it slowly deteriorating over the years. Gabriel and Lillian wanted different things; Lillian had become obsessed with deities and contracts. She was determined to make a deal with the new time deity, hoping to gain immortality for herself, much to Gabriel’s dismay. He wanted nothing to do with Entity’s successor, who had still not shown themself, and he would want nothing to do with Lillian if she managed to receive a gift from them. He tried talking her out of it. He would change the subject every time she brought it up, starting many arguments in the process. Eventually, he threatened her; If she continued trying to make a contract with the time deity, he would consider it a direct challenge to him and would end their partnership. Lillian had no problem ending their partnership right there. She was fine with that. Her hunger for power blinded her, creating an enemy out of someone who wouldn’t stop until he won.

WORKING WITH KIRA

A few years after severing his ties with Lillian, Gabriel met Kira. Gabriel and Lillian had quickly developed a deep rooted hatred for each other. He wanted her dead, and she wanted him dead, however unrealistic her goal was. He had grown a little paranoid in the past years— He had nothing to defend himself. Sure, nothing she could do could have any permanent effect on him, but he would rather save himself the annoyance of dealing with whatever she decided to throw at him. There was also the looming threat of the reborn deity of time choosing to listen to her prayers and give her what she wanted, which, somewhat, scared him. She could kill him then, if she wanted to. That’s where Kira came in. She didn’t have much of a reputation, and the one she did have wasn’t exactly favorable. He had overheard whispers about her. Them bumping into each other was a coincidence, but he considered it an act of fate. He decided she would be his best bet to fight against Lillian. The two never really became what he considered friends, but they weren’t completely distant either.

Their partnership was short. It ended with Kira’s sudden betrayal. She ran to Lillian, despite knowing the situation between the two. He wouldn’t have cared if she hadn’t run to Lillian, but she had doomed herself to a life of being hunted by him. He kept watch of her, waiting for the right time to get rid of her.

WORKING WITH FAUST

Working with Faust was his only successful partnership, and it didn’t last very long, which was his own doing. They bumped into each other, seemed to get along, and bonded over having connections with deities. They started working together, just through favors at first. Faust would exchange money for connections and information from Gabriel.

They never had a falling out or really argued at all, though Faust’s tendency to eavesdrop and pry into his business bothered him a little. One day, he decided he didn’t need her anymore and slipped away, leaving her with no idea where he had gone.

RELATIONSHIPS

From the second Gabriel learned of Lillian and her expansive influence, he made it his goal to befriend her. He had an ever growing backlog of connections to powerful people that most could only ever dream of, but Lillian was not most people. She could influence the masses without a single person noticing, twist the perception of even the most critical skeptic, and convince practically anyone that she was the most vital business partner. She had an aura of natural charisma that was unmatchable. He wanted that. Luckily for him, Lillian was willing to accept his proposal. A contract was forged, though the terms were looser than he would have liked. She was smarter than most, seeing through his tricks and skillfully dodging every last one of his attempts to bind her into a contract that would place him at an unfair advantage. Gabriel was frustrated, but impressed, so he continued on with his plan. Having someone who could challenge his progress was a good thing, after all. As time passed, the two became unlikely friends. He knew her secrets, and she knew his. He helped her, and she helped him. Unlike the majority of his former partnerships, this one seemed like it would last— at least, that was what he assumed… but premature assumptions often end in disappointment. Lillian wanted more than he was willing to offer. She wanted to live forever; to challenge her own mortality, just as he had when he was young. The very thing he had grown to regret with every fiber of his being. For anyone else, he may have agreed, but she knew how much such a request meant to him. Furious, he denied her constant prodding and left without a word, just as he had many times before. He reveled in knowing that despite the sly smirks and petty remarks she relied on to intimidate him, she would never get what she truly wanted. They were locked in a permanent stalemate, neither of them wanting to sacrifice everything to end their petty little game.

Gabriel had heard whispers of Kira for some time before she piqued his interest. Her reputation was messy, but her adeptness outshined her flaws in the eyes of those who sought her out. Her rates were cheap, her work was quick, and she was more reliable than most. She would be the perfect pawn, a perfect intimidation tactic. Hiring her was easy, and tricking her into working under his conditions was even easier; it was made clear that she was to be nothing more than a shadow, silently following in his footsteps. However, the ease in which he had secured this little deal ended there. Despite her naïveté, she was quick to startle and grow suspicious. The emotional baggage that she dragged around interfered with many of her simple tasks. Kira and Gabriel never saw eye to eye, and that was evident in her clear dislike for him. Gabriel, of course, took advantage of her growing hatred and used it against her. She would leave, and almost immediately come crawling back— until one time, she didn’t. She betrayed one last time, seeking solace in Lillian instead. He had never expected much from such a pitiful creature, but even this was an outcome that he had failed to consider. He suppressed his anger, promising himself that he would repay her eventually. Her alliance with Lillian may have kept her out of his grasp for a few fleeting moments, but it would make it all the more easy for him to get rid of her the moment that friendship ended.

Faust was yet another pawn in Gabriel’s little game. They had a mutual partnership— he would offer up the benefits of his connections, and she would return his favors with generous amounts of money. It was an easy way for him to avoid the tiring process of snaking his way into the lives of wealthy citizens and prying their beloved cash from their fingers. Faust was never interested in pursuing a friendship, and neither was he. In truth, he had never quite gotten along with people like her; unsurprisingly, people who participated in shady gambling rings were often unreliable. However, despite the distance between them, he could sense that she was itching to learn more of his past. Occasionally, something would slip and pique her interest, but it was never enough to allow her to piece any of it together. He had learned from his friendship with Lillian that revealing anything that could be used against him would be beneficial to no one. Their partnership was over as quickly as it began, and Gabriel made sure to completely vanish from her line of sight.
