Alaster can never make up his mind. Depending on the day and what he is doing at the time, he either wishes he felt nothing at all or else he's cursing how little he cares about anything anymore and, while he thinks he's a worthless monster undeserving of any redemption, he will immediately reject such notions if someone else echoes them. Of course, the whole 'indecisive' thing might have stemmed from his over-controlling parents and how the few important decision he DID make himself had terrible awful results but that doesn't make his contrary nature any less annoying. Plus he's always had the bad habit of dealing with everything in extremes with very little middle ground, which also made pursuing any interests he had frustrating. Alaster can't STAND being bad at things but he's discouraged easily so he ends up trying really hard while simultaneously believing it's a waste of time that won't amount to anything until he eventually just gives up.

Naturally, this is not a beneficial mindset for someone who has never felt like they were good enough at anything and eventually Alaster's self esteem hit the negatives where he decided with 100% certainty that everyone would be better off if he had never existed at all. This is one of the main reasons Alaster isolates himself. The others are for more noticeable reasons such as how he's REALLY AWFUL in social situations and is prone to interpreting everything as an insult, flat out ignoring the other person, and general discomfort. If you ever REALLY want to confuse him, throw some genuine compliments his way and he'll have no idea how to react because his default state of mind is that everyone hates him at least half as much as he hates himself. Still, Alaster will be civil if a person is civil to him first (though he'll still be low-key suspicious of them the entire time- unless they're a ghost, he's more accepting of ghosts than actual living flesh people). He doesn't purposely pick fights out of nowhere and would really just prefer to be left alone where he won't embarrass himself by instinctively lashing out at the smallest (and probably accidental) provocation.

History

Alaster was pretty much born to take over the ILLUSTRIOUS FAMILY COMPANY and had a very strict upbringing that basically revolved around trying and failing to be perfect at everything. Also he could see ghosts which was sort of a problem because no one else could and he hid it about as well as a highly stressed, awkward, and insecure child would and was eventually sent to an asylum so he would stop being an embarrassment to his parents (and also maybe stop hallucinating or something but it was mostly the former reason his parents were p awful).

After about four years there, he eventually made a deal with a ghost named Rith who promised that if Alaster lent him his body in order to get a thing, he would get him outta there. Well, Rith definitely got him out of there by the highly effective method of murder and went out to find a dead bird's foot, i mean, THE PHOENIX'S TALON which was rumored to be able to bring the dead back to life, grant blessings, blah blah blah generic mystical stuff.

AND BY ASSOCIATION ALASTER SINCE RITH WAS STILL POSSESSING HIM
The phoenix's talon requires the person who touches it to go through a judgement to see if they are ~WORTHY~ of the super awesome blessings and, surprising absolutely no one, Rith was not worthy. However, Alaster was. HOWEVER, Rith was still in his body which was what actually received the curse + the blessing. So Rith was expelled from Alaster's body by the power of the dead bird foot and Alaster received both the curse and the blessing which SOMEHOW???? combined in such a way that he was turned into a sentient zombie with super great reflexes and senses (excluding touch) and some weird sort of armor but was still very dead and could only eat other people and was hungry all the time. Alaster has not been handling this development very well.
