Tesei is a figure shrouded in mystery and a name that only exists in the fine print of business documents for a small Sa'vel library. The skarrid behind it, more commonly known as Virgo of the A'vock council, doesn't let their moniker and rank be tied to personal information either, nor have they shown their face to the public in decades. As a Skarrid and a higher-up in charge of Arivir laws and governing decisions, they've taken liberties with that control and made sure everything the public knows about them and those they care for has been the result of a calculated decision. In theory, they are almost a myth. In reality, they're anxiously pulling the strings in Sa'vel and trying to do some damage control.

In the Council of A'vock, they are often the voice of reason, a walking logbook... and in charge of paperwork. Beyond that, they are source and keeper of the last three millenia or so worth of skarrid history. All personal accounts.

Notes

  • Official reference drawn by Eggdis. Follow this when drawing.
  • Edwardian-inspired fashion. Androgynous clothing style. They favour a masculine top and roomier, more feminine bottom - a simple vest, shirt and skirt combo suffices on most days, so long as their centaur half is sufficiently draped for modesty. Prefers soft cloth shoes to hard soles. Undergarments consist of a medical stays or corset that double as shapewear (for a more masculine, conical form) over a cotton or silk chemise. A pocket watch with the Virgo symbol often hangs from somewhere.
  • 6aCgoth.png onGNwbs.png AxjaKKI.png mqtmosQ.png I634zts.png
  • They have very poor eyesight in all eyes but the palm ones, so accessories consist of a complex pair of glasses. Other jewellery only on special occasions and to match with fancier clothing - the rare dress or three-piece.
  • An ever-present flower tucked into the breast pocket of their vests always corresponds with their mood.
  • As all avarris, they have a full draconic form they can shift into at will. They can also subtitute their centaurism with legs and transform into something more human as well. That form is taller by some 3 cm.
  • Scars from fairly recent (read, last few years) top surgery.
  • Their ears have a wide range of motion and correspond with their moods.
  • Occasionally uses a walking cane.

Tesei is a hurricane in a teacup. A refined craftsmanship of regal serenity, kindness and intelligence on the outside, packed with concern, overthinking and unrest on the inside.

The idea most get upon meeting them is of a polite, softspoken giant, meticulous in speech and work ethic, offering grains of wisdom on automatic. They seem disenchanted and too in-the-know of life to be surprised by much, instead finding excitement in unorthodox things, odd interests and musings about the mundane. Any choice they make sounds to be thoroughly considered.

They are calmest and most cheerful in their home, surrounded by loved ones, while their more upstrung, fridid nature comes out in unfamiliar environments, where they don't mince words and delegate confidently. In private, they're sweet and nagging, an absolute bleeding heart, unashamed of their outdated humour, excitability about books, birds and halloween, and get easily distracted by pointless, out of place concepts. Tesei's interests involve most of anything. Prone to rabbit-hole thinking. They easily self-appoint themself as responsible for figuring out the world, then documenting it. Can spin themself into a frenzy to reach whatever truth or right decision they're obsessed with at a time, and may even jump from one dogma to another to reach it. And while they may not yet understand the world entirely, they need to have a solid goal within it at any time. Without direction, the skarrid feels useless.

Books

They're called wells of knowledge for a reason. Tesei's favourites include history, philosophy and creative literature.

Gardening

Born with a green thumb, have always grown their own produce and recently caught an interest in endangered species. Talks to plants.

Savoury foods

Even they'll admit their late mother might've brainwashed them accidentally with her fondness of spices and herbs. Tesei's always been fond of very strong flavours.

Dark humour

In proper company the skarrid can pull a joke out of very macabre topics.

𝓓𝓲𝓼𝓵𝓲𝓴𝓮𝓼

Sweating

Tesei's infamous for their clothes layering. Soaking two undergarments tends to be an unpleasant experience for them.

The kids getting in trouble

They may be adults, but Tesei will stop worrying only when Cassius kicks his fondness of microwaving things for good.

Unhealthy habits.

Their own included. Trying to get their circadian rhythm under control. Will pour water on cigarettes.

Aggressive conflict

Though large, powerful and equipped with the tools to persevere in fights both mental or physical, the skarrid is a devout pacifist and finds those quick to anger tactless.

Home

They own a large, old house in Sa'vel. The building still maintains its original edwardian gothic architecture, decorated with arches and sculpted details. The lower floor has been opened to the public, serving as a spacious library. Tall ceilings allow for double-stacking of bookshelves and a skinny skylight illuminates the very middle of the reading section. Meanwhile, the floor above is partially closed off, occupied by Tesei's personal dwellings - three spacious bedrooms, kitchen, study and a winter garden sitting room. There are two large balconies with luscious hanging gardens and vines spanning the sides of the building. Some of the architecture is weathered.

Powers

  • Although all skarrid have telepathic connection between each other, Tesei's abilities allow them to extend beyond their breed and form mental connections with other Avarris. They're able to read minds and project their voice into another's mind. They have control of that voice - deepen it, make it louder, reverberate, mimic and even multiply. Some drawbacks: They need close proximity to infiltrate a mind, and if otherwise, they need a name. They can't lead multiple telepathic conversations or read multiple minds. Prolonged use causes migraines lately.
  • Beyond telepathy, their mental prowess allows them staggering power over their own mind as well. The skarrid may alter their own senses, memories, thoughts and needs. They can stave off thirst, hunger, pain, discomfort and much more. They can lock away unpleasant memories in the moment and unlock them at a later time for consideration. And they have.

Memoirs

Tesei keeps journals detailing everything they know and have learned so far. There's a section of their separate, personal library dedicated to it. Though it began as simple journaling in their younger years, it's turned into an obsession. Besides keeping their memory jogged up over the course of three millenia, they also consider their journals a back-up that would help them return to their 'old self' if they ever died and were reborn yet again.

In the very beginning, when Arivir was young, newly created by the goddess of infinity, Ankarresh, her lover A'vock, patron of order and time, thought to populate it in her honor. One of their children he sculpted in the image of his beloved and called Virgo. And thusly I was born. Another he gifted a tail to traverse the waters with and named Capricorn. And so forth, he created 12 beings and breathed life into them. The Skarrid, demigods of Arivir. The zodiac..

When, following her beloved's example, Ankarresh created more life - the first avarris - the skarrid began to aid and lead them in this new world. Gemini, a master of transformation, taught them how to shift into dragons. Aries, shepherd of the sky, lead rainclouds to their crops and sent storms after their predators. I, in tune with the mind, listened to the avarris and helped them write laws, lead parlay, settle conflict. I watched as the world prospered for many years under the watchful gazes of Ankarresh and A'vock, bathed in golden light..

Until A'vock's sibling, Naenarvas, god of moon and of chaos, began weaving the night sky. It was a map of stars, a blanket Ankarresh and Naenarvas weaved together, in the image of the moon god's veil. But the tender celestial fabric ripped easily or fell into thief hands, so to keep it safe, Ankarresh attached it to Virgo's horns, gifting me with a veil that divulged celestial secrets. Exuberant, Naenarvas began weaving another, much larger veil in secret. A gift. A beautiful dark sky filled with twinkling lights. They placed two moons atop it and sprinkled clusters of stars in honor of each of the 12 firstborn. Thus the constellations were created. Naenarvas wished for Ankarresh, A'vock and the children of Arivir to see this gift so badly, one day they draped the blanket over the sky and plunged the world into darkness for the first time ever. .

Expecting awe and joy at the sight of stars, Naenarvas lamented to see the avarris so afraid of the their creation. Many recoiled from the dark. Some accepted it. Enchanted by the twinkling sky, they began living their lives at night. Their eyes darkened, their skin paled and what they lacked without the sun, they took from other avarris. These were the first nocturnal creatures of the world. Convinced they had developed a great sickness, some shunned them, dubbing them, resentfully, 'Vamarris'. This I had always thought a cruelty and, though times have changed, I still do. Upon the first attacks the Vamarris made on their fellow kin avarris, those who shunned them grew wearier and angrier still. They hunted the moon god for their transgressions, seeking to kill the originator of the cursed sky and monsters.

Wounded and in pain, Naenarvas fled their prosecutors, and by a stroke of luck, happened upon Aquarius. One of the 12, she had a gift of healing and had performed miracles on earth. Now she readily healed the stranger, unknowingly to who they were. But the Avarris caught on and angered at Aquarius as well. Quickly, they forgot how she had healed and nurtured them and fell upon her. Her pain rung within my heart and mind, but I could not come in time. When I arrived and beheld her, slain, the blood boiled in my veins and I blindly sought revenge. It did not quench my sorrow for the first blood I spilt to be in her name, but I did not cease until my own wounds overtook me.

Come morning, light shone upon the carnage. With Aquarius dead and Naenarvas missing, Allmotjer Ankarresh had ascended to the sky as the sun itself to mourn a daughter, refusing to share a sky with the moon god she thought responsible. And so began the day night cycle. When I awoke and beheld the chaos of the universe, I wept bitterly. So many had left us - Aquarius, mother, Naenarvas. And though I feel our father's presence still on this earth, I know he does not wish to be found. To him, and to my remaining brothers and sisters, I write this, on my deathbed, weakened by my incurable wounds, so that they may learn of The Moon God's innocence. And to the world, I leave the story of its dawn, and of its dusk.

The story begins some 3,000 years ago in the city of Na'vock, with loving feathered avarri couple Vesvi and Milnor Sildarus. There is peace in the land, harvest is plentiful, the gods are merciful and skarrid are but a debated myth amongst the avarris populace. The young Sildarus family settles in a humble home up high in the hanging gardens of the town and begins decorating a nursery. Months later, four eggs hatch. First are Milohi and Balu, little boat-tailed grackles with identical markings they've clearly gotten from dear daddy. Hatched at the same time, they're considered twins. Next is Yiona, proud bluejay like mom, a little late and fussy, but equally as beloved. The fourth egg is twice the size of its brothers and sister and they could've sworn it's even grown a little throughout the last month, so the Sildadus clan gathers to excitedly welcome the final addition. And keeps waiting.

It takes a month more until it finally happens. The egg's grown to the size of a kitchen pot by then and anticipation has turned into apprehension. The child is abnormal according to the grandparents, mutated if you ask the gossiping aunts and certain neighbours say it's infidelity. Whatever the rumour, not much can prepare Vesvi and Milnor for Tesei Sildarus. The child is born with horns fully formed, six eyes in peculiar places, with a centaur lower half, not even the rudiment of wings to be found, a strange symbol on their tail and the most brilliant veil of the night sky draping from their head instead of hair.

Tesei's family looks the other way and mentions nothing of their very existence, worried the child's birth would attract the wrong attention - danger, ridicule, dishonor on their name. Still, among themselves they whisper that the gods have blessed their bloodline with a skarrid. They've heard the rumour and myth. Could it be true? A demigod in their midst. And so it goes Tesei grows up well-protected. Not quite hidden; simply kept away from the spotlight for fear of questions. And there are questions plenty. In comparison to their siblings Tesei is a sweet, sensitive child much to Vesvi and Milnor's delight, yet most peculiar in their amassing of oddities. First it's the 'sun woman in the sky' which, in its persistence as a phenomenon Tesei claims to experience, leads to the slow dawning realization that the child can see Ankarresh herself - the sun goddess, the posited mother of all skarrid. Second it's Tesei's penchant for knowing far too much than they should. Thoughts, actions, even dreams cannot escape their odd semi-omniscience. When their knowledge transcends their family and people most familiar to them and extends to pure strangers, Milnor knows they have a mind reader on their hands.

Tesei's thankfully a quiet, reserved kid, their family a source of love and happiness sufficient enough for them to not seek any elsewhere. This spares them the odd stares and ridicule until late childhood, though bullying doesn't stay a foreign concept for long. Even unettered slights hurt when one can hear them thought. It doesn't help that of all the eyes they' ve been blessed with, none but the ones on their palms allow for clear eyesight, forcing them to explore the world with arms extended. Shy and scholarly, Tesei's a terribly easy target, and even though few dare raise their hand against a child as large and strong beyond their age, words cut as deep as knives. A sweet respite they find in the most modest temple of worship in town - a place quiet and rarely busy, and thusly used to store what few scripts of written word the priests'd managed to obtain. There Tesei finds peace, companionship and, for the first time, reverence unfamiliar to them before. The scribe tells them of their own myth, even teaches them to read per request so they may see for themself. Soon introduced to the art of written word as well and curious about their heritage, Tesei is indicted into a scribe apprenticeship. Of all books they make copies of, they are allowed to keep one of each, as payment. And so they begin to amass their first, modest, tiny library.

The letter arrives for them on their 50th birthday. A summons from the mysterious Council of A'vock - the governmental power of their world - bidding Tesei appear before them to reclaim their birthright as Virgo of the Skarrid. Their family laments the call as blatant theft, Yiona most of all, but all make peace with Tesei's heritage. Along with the letter has come a wood and leather bound tome titled 'Denna. Memoirs.' and from the pages within, written and adressed as letters to some purported ancestor, the young skarrid learns the ancestor is indeed them and the life detailed in the tome - the one of the Virgo before them. Denna tells them of how the skarrid are reborn, that she is the second Virgo and that Tesei would be the third and gives them brief introductions to the other 11 firstborn they will meet and grow to love. Of them all, closest and most beloved seems to be Estriis. Denna's adoptive father. It turns out, he is exactly the man Tesei will apprentice under in the Council.

And so Tesei disembarks to Sa'vel. To the Great Spire, and arrives a bright-eyed young protege, only to meet the most sullen old man imaginable. Estriis is a cold, distant figure, far from fatherly and heads inevitably butt soon enough. But though he be unpleasant, the elder skarrid mentors Tesei on their powers, helps with duties and grants them access to the extended volumes of Virgo's History of The World - the library where all the Virgos thus far have gathered their memoirs. From the hundreds of books there Tesei learns the myth of their own creation and of their ancestors' past lives, a variety of facts both fascinating and.. disturbing. The extend of Denna's lifestory is a rather cruel, revolting affair to the young skarrid - it's difficult to reconcile their own soft, bleeding heart with a cold, bitter, warmongerer past self. They follow Denna as she grow from a hurt child into a violent god-hating adult with several terrifying skillsets, one of which telepathic ability, who sees no morally reprehensible issue with utilizing them to meddle in sensitive politics. Namely, wars... The only digestible part of Denna's tale is the shift that gradually befalls their writing as they meet and later fall in love with an intelligent, kind human man named Kevar from a diplomatic envoy. Ever a lover of sweet, romantic tales and swayed by their predecessor's generous rhapsodizing, Tesei too find themself growing fond of a man who was, by all means, once another self's love... and therefore their own. Right?

Stories of Denna strike Tesei with a deep-seated guilt. All their strongly calculated violence, the horrid way they die in the elf-avarri war, leaving a bereaved human husband behind to wander the land aimless and the loving letter they write for him before disembarking to her demise. Driven by their own hatred of cruelty, a need to atone for the crimes from a life they don't even remember living and perhaps a silly, lovestruck desire to honor Kevar's name, they vow to dedicate their life to peace this time around and throw themselves into politics and diplomacy education. Amongst Denna's writings Tesei finds correspondence between the two - relics of a deep, fascinating love between two creatures with natures at odd with one another. Creatures who do not change for each other, but love one another all the same from the two sides of a great conflict; who even marry, til death do them part.

Proof enough that commonground could be found anywhere, even at odd places, their tale inspires Tesei to personally involve themself in brokering peace once tension in the land peaks and war breaks out again. Through diplomatic envoys they suspend two grand battles and get grievously injured in a third where fighting turns inevitable. They suffer a horrid spinal fracture and multiple lacerations - a near loss of their life which Nephthis herself barely staves off with her healing. The war concludes in peace treaties some months later and Tesei retreats into hiding to lick their wounds. Recovery takes years, relearning to walk takes longer, but a restless mind makes up for a restful body. Tesei dedicates themself to intellectual and scholarly pursuit. Important new laws are drafted, several books get written, a library is opened in Kevar's name and Tesei moves their residence to it. They never quite exit hermitdom, never become as gregarious and welcoming as they once were. A new, wearier Virgo comes out the other end of that war, though, one even more determined to make change in the world.

Their heart they open fully again only with the arrival of the Gemini twins. Discovered to have died brutally, been reborn and orphaned swiftly, and put into an unpleasant environment after the fact, they're a task Estriis consigns to Tesei almost authoritatively. Yet the skarrid takes responsibility regardless, unprepared for fostering - nay, parenthood - as they are. Calixis and Cassius prove a melancholy challenge.. Weary and skittish, they're a pair of deeply hurt children whose trust is rarely, strenuously earned, if greatly rewarding. It takes a while to build a family with them, but soon beneath the terrified exterior emerge the darling sweetheart and troublemaker Tesei loves to this day..

Cassius and Calixis

Son and Daughter

The Gemini Twins. Tesei's adopted children. The nearest and dearest to their heart. Even before their hasty adoption and current life, the skarrid had always worried for them and their fragile disposition. They're glad they get to protect them this time around, and though it was a learning curve the whole way through, they couldn't be prouder of the little family unit they've become. They were allowed to, at last, give Gemini a stable, healthy home and fervent protection within a warm circle of familiar people, and the twins in return helped make Tesei's journey into parenthood a forgiving, sweet and fulfilling one.

Notus the Harpy

Adopted kiddo

Tesei found the little feral harpy as a runt babe some years ago, rolling around at the base of a tree and couldn't pass by without offering a nurturing hand. The plan was to rear the small fella and then set him free, but fast forward three years later, Notus has become a permanent fixture to the household and resident spoiled prince. If one wonders why he's named after the anemoi of summer storms and destroyer of crops, let's just say his disposition matches and he doesn't leave a plant standing. Tesei's accidentally made a brat out of him, but at least he's clearly well-loved and coddled.

Marcius Sarorn

Tentative fondness

A man Tesei never expected to grow so horribly fond of, seeing as they began as natural enemies and their first meeting consisted of Tesei forcefully invading Marcius' mind out of curiosity and in search of intel on the greatest threat to their land's security. Yet along their correspondence, in such a painfully bittersweet Kevar-Denna fashion, Tesei found themself finding affection for the wretched, maddening man. Through frequent chats, finding common ground and even understanding for each other, they've grown dangerously close. Yes, perhaps one day Tesei may have to face Marcius as an enemy and they know then that their hand would not flinch, but until then.. for just a while longer.. they wish to hold him to themself.
