♫ Clap back, get your girls // Side by side, don't you hold it in // Clap back, speak your mind // Say it twice so they don't forget ♫

- RuPaul, Clapback.

Public Bio

For the longest time, sukeban were thought of in the past-tense: a post-war counterculture, culled by commodification and changing trends… Until Blue Kindness hit the news. Founded in defiance of the Japanese proverb “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down”, this alt girl gang headed by Haruna ‘Kugi’ Yamane drew media attention after they took down a group of male delinquents terrorising their local area. A recruitment video previously shot by Haruna was soon leaked and went viral, and has since been credited for a resurgence of girl gang activity. In recognition of her cultural impact, Hope’s Peak Academy has awarded her the title SHSL Sukeban.

According to Haruna, Blue Kindness remains open to new members and welcomes every subculture from punk to lolita, as well as any woman invigorated by the questions “Aren’t you tired of being nice?” and “Don’t you just wanna go apeshit?”

Appearance

(Disclaimer: some details may not be reflected accurately in the artwork.)

Standing proud at 5ft8 and 132lbs, Haruna is a tall girl with an athletic build and not much of a figure. She has short, messy hair that you can tell is dyed pink because her roots are showing and she hasn’t bothered to colour her eyebrows. Said eyebrows are plucked straight and thin, lending a severity to her eyes that she tries to soften by using playful expressions, though unfortunately for her, this usually only works up until she grins because that’s when people realise she’s had a tooth knocked out. Haruna’s other battle damage comes in the form of scars, including one on her earlobe from where she’s lost an earring and one on the back of her calf from that time she tripped over barbed wire. Her clothes cover the rest of her marks, but she’s more than happy to give a full tour to anyone who’s particularly curious.

Speaking of her clothes, Haruna is wearing her so-called “good girl uniform”, which has a pastel colour palette unheard of in sukeban attire. Her best friend Anzu made it for her to wear at HPA in the hope that the light colours would make Haruna more approachable, since the girls in her class could rest assured that she wasn’t covered in blood or anything else suspicious. The uniform in question is an altered version of a white and blue sailor fuku, consisting of a short-sleeved blouse with a pink necktie (embellished with her previous school’s symbol) and a calf-length skirt. The white blouse, which has two blue lines near the collar’s edge to match the two white lines above the skirt’s hem, has been cropped and had its chest panel removed to show some of Haruna’s stomach and sternum area respectively, both of which are flat but toned. Part of the skirt has also been cut out to free the side of Haruna’s entire left leg. The remaining pleats are connected at the waistband, with a built-in belt crossing above the exposed thigh to hold the front and back of the skirt together. Needless to say, Haruna has to wear biker shorts underneath this ensemble. As for shoes, she’s opted for some white Converse-style trainers with pink laces. Finally, the look is finished off with a number of accessories: a plain black choker, one black fighting glove, and a rainbow of silly bands on her wrist that she dedicates to the members of Blue Kindness. She’s also got a silver-coloured tongue stud and has white-painted fingernails.

This reimagining of sukeban fashion is inspired by both freedom of movement and freedom of expression, with Haruna’s aesthetic intentionally rebelling against the traditional Japanese beauty standards that have suppressed her and the rest of Blue Kindness for long enough. Her appearance is a political statement; one that she is proud to embody.
