the lonely moments just get lonelier, the longer you're in love...

love really changes a man! like most of the deities, no matter how minor, coral took extreme pride in his duty. he had been chosen to guard the seas for a reason and he'd fulfill his role to the best of ability. he lived and breathed the sea--in a way, he was the sea incarnate. coral was meticulous and thorough in all of his work. he swore to never endanger the sea, to always put it first: even over himself, if necessary.
as the ocean grew more polluted and the problems kept multiplying, coral decided to find an apprentice. he chose sylph, a creature with an uncanny resemblance to himself with a strong affinity for water. he began to teach sylph everything he knew and the two became a formidable pair for centuries. one day, though, coral decided to go on a mainland expedition to keep tabs on how the freshwater deities were faring. he had heard of a powerful elemental pack of wolves, too, and thought he might be able to observe them along the way. not used to the dense forest, though, he got lost...until he met blossom.
blossom, one of the famed elemental wolves, was hunting. coral's lumbering had scared off most of the prey in the area, however, and that's who blossom ended up finding. the two fought, at first, with coral upset about being lost and blossom upset about losing valuable food. eventually, they calmed down and just began to talk--blossom likened coral to a breath of fresh air and the longer she talked to him, the longer she could avoid her sister. coral was surprisingly happy for the company. he loved teaching sylph and thought that relationship was all he needed, but blossom awakened his desire to have a genuine friendship. he found that friendship in blossom. eventually, blossom led coral out of the forest but made him promise to visit again. so he did. so much so that he began to neglect his duties and become far too carefree and in love.
sylph was left with the burden of managing coral's duties and she grew frustrated with him when he refused to listen to the consequences of spending hours with blossom. coral probably wouldn't have cared, anyway, because his gaze was hazed by love. but, like so many good things, coral's supposed happy ending with blossom was too good to be true. unbeknownst to coral and blossom, a suspicious frostbound had been watching their encounters for months. when coral decided to reject his duties and become a mortal unbound to the sea to live with blossom, frostbound struck and killed the former deity before he had a chance to tell his lover of the news. blossom realized something was wrong when coral didn't show up at their meeting spot for weeks on end, blue scales and his torn claw littering the riverbank. she still searches for him, in denial about his death, grief-stricken and vengeful.
