From the start Desmond was dealt a relatively bad hand in life. Soon after his birth his mother left his father, and Desmond was left with a father who, while an incredibly kind man, had very little financial footing. Growing up Desmond always had it in his mind that he was a waste of money, and whilst his father tried his best to convince Desmond otherwise, he hardly ever truly believed in his father's words. Because of this Desmond was quick to leave his house at 14, despite not really having anywhere to go. From then on Desmond lived on the streets, pickpocketing people's wallets and such to buy food with, as well as leaving a small sum of what he got on the doorstep of his father's apartment as a form of "apology" for being born. Despite the dull life he led Desmond managed to stay somewhat positive throughout it. Wether that be actual positivity or self preservation is anyone’s guess, but Desmond has managed to carry on with his life... until he got hit by Richard’s car because Richard can’t drive for shit. The car crash resulted in Desmond breaking his left hand, and seeing the sheer state of him Richard decided to let Desmond stay at his house. After that both of them started living together, gradually growing closer as friends and eventually lovers. But neither of them can catch a break in life, and as soon as things started looking up Richard fell victim to a gruesome murder. Once Richard’s murder occurred Desmond was the suspected culprit, and after a very tense court case Desmond was sent to an mental asylum (not a great solution but it was either that or death penalty). But, in typical Desmond fashion, everything goes to shit and Desmond ends up dead via electric shock after an ECT machine in the building malfunctions, and he too gets thrown into the afterlife to become a stupid little green raccoon. 

Coincidentally Desmond also ends up in the city of Lycirelle, and after a couple of pointers from some spirits Desmond once again finds Richard. But things aren't fine just yet cause Richard has gone a bit loopy since he died (murder will do that to you I suppose), and running a wildly successful casino has left him more cocky and snobbish than ever. Desmond's then left to try to get Richard to snap out of his power trip and just like,,, chill out cause he's really losing it.
