Ryoichi comes off cold and calloused, though that is due in part to his upbringing. Instead of providing verbal support, he prefers to go out of his way to show kindness and do things that he thinks would be well-received. He has a strong moral compass and makes it known when he deems the timing right. Otherwise, he'd rather stay quiet and tends to keep to himself.
Due to his cursed technique dealing with hand signs, he tends to limit the use of his hands in order to not accidentally use his technique. His cursed technique also leaves him with injuries on his hands and fingers, so he is often seen with wraps and braces.
Ryoichi was born to the heads of a powerful cult that revered both curses and curse users. When it was discovered that he could both see curses and use a cursed technique, he was very quickly indoctrinated as the figurehead of the cult. Both his parents and the cult members saw the repurcussions of using his cursed technique as an act of martyrdom and further revered him. From a young age, he was manipulated heavily into using his technique to further the ideals of the cult, and soon began to become disgusted with both curse power as a whole and himself for using it. This didn't sit well with his parents, and they quickly isolated him, only taking him out of isolation when there was something only he could do.
On one of the nights he was taken out of isolation in order to quell a rogue curse, Ryoichi encountered Shinnosuke Ukita, whose parents had already been killed by said curse. Upon seeing firsthand the injustice that his family had caused, he saw no other choice than to put an end to the cult.
That same night, a group of Jujutsu Sorcerers from the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College had been dispatched to do the same thing, and when they did arrive, Ryo had already taken out each and every cult member, including his parents. Instead of executing him, as what is protocol for curse users who use their cursed techniques against humans, he was instead welcomed to the school where he would be able to learn about and hone his curse ability.
As a first year, he battled constantly with his disgust in himself as well as curse power. He couldn't stand the thought of being responsible of hurting another person, and had a difficult time seeing curse power used for anything but. He slowly grew to somewhat accept curse power as a whole, but still grapples with his self loathing. He has grown to become an accomplished Jujutsu Sorcerer, and many are eager to see his technique in person, despite his cold demeanor.

Ryoichi saved his life from a curse that had killed his parents. Shinnosuke now feels indebted to him, and is (currently) the only person that Ryoichi trusts enough to be around him. The two work very well as a pair, with Ryoichi able to output many diverse and powerful attacks, and Shinnosuke able to mend the damage done to Ryo's hands by his own cursed technique.
Outside of the school, they are often seen at local arcades. While Ryoichi cannot play any video games himself, he does enjoy watching Shinnosuke play.
