Dave knows for a fact that he’s nothing more than a character in a game. Since trouble has followed him for most of his life, he immersed himself in the arcane with the intention of rebelling against fate, or whoever it is that’s rolling the dice. He hoped that through study he’d gain power to protect himself and others, as well as sidestep forthcoming events of a nastier breed. His family’s brand of divination magic, however, comes with a curse for non-elves — using powerful spells too soon or too often risks shattering Dave to pieces, physically and mentally.
