Claire is the part of us all we try to ignore that thinks "ok, but what if I just went and fucked it all up". Growing up with unsupportive and overbearing parents has lead her to being a reckless, isolated and self-sabotaging person. She is also extremely smart , ambitious, and driven, and had been putting herself through college and living independently since she moved out directly after highschool. She can't afford additional things like therapy or transition on her own, and also can't accept that she's worthy of those things in the first place.
In college she gets into a viscous cycle of getting into a toxic party lifestyle, then desperately cramming to fix her grades and pass her exams, and then burning out from overwork and going back to partying.
She meets Daniel, a demon who seeks her out as his prey to manipulate and control to his will, and she just can't keep herself away from him. She's only recently socially transitioned to being a girl, and isn't used to being treated as attractive without being fetishized, but as a demon Daniel doesn't understand the human concept of gender in the first place and is the first person in her life to truly accept her as a girl. He's upfront about her toxic nature and that works on Claire, as she finds it refreshing. They begin to date with then both knowing that Daniel only intends to use Claire.
Claire also meets Calandré, a Pixie Fae investigating the human world and doing extensive research on its historical and cultural fashion. Cal is extremely friendly and excitable, and offers to make Claire as many new dresses as she can wear, as long as she'll models them for Cal to take pictures for their portfolio. Calandré falls in love with Claire, but Claire is already with Daniel, and he constantly keeps her feeling like she doesn't deserve anything better, so she desperately tries to not consider her feelings for Cal.
