Decarcha of the Water is one of two warriors brought up to fight for Cherri of the Fire's hand in marriage. He fought for his entire life to beat his pompous and violent rival Kazume, but rarely ever won in their annual spars, and had all but accepted his defeat and death in the final battle between them. He grew up believing he was destined to die and lose the person he loves most to an awful life trapped married to a prick she hates.
In the last year before the final battle, Cherri confided in Decarcha that she was terrified of any outcome in the fight, as she wasn't attracted to men and was repulsed by the idea of producing an heir, both in the physical conception of a child and in the idea that it might be subjected to the same life as they have. Decarcha's heart broke for her, and them broke for himself that the girl he loves would never feel the same way. Regardless, he put his feelings aside, and the two vowed to run away together. As they were planning this, the Dragon War began and they had to rush out with whatever they could while they had the chance.
Narrowly surviving the voyage, they arrived across the seas and were taken in as war refugees. Decarcha works hard with Cherri for the two of them to make lives for themselves in a new country, but became depressed and directionless as she began to move on with her life apart from him. Decarcha was raised to see being with Cherri as his goal in life, and now that's never going to happen, and he has to find out who he is outside of who he was raised to be.
Cherri and her new girlfriends begin to drag him out to social events and encourage him to be more outgoing and try new things. One of these outings is a concert, where he meets Studio and Devi. Devi becomes close friends with Cherri and her Girlfriends, so Decarcha sees her best friend Studio often. Studio is a rowdy and defiant one-handed punk who reminds Decarcha of the energy he used to have in his teens, and they end up hanging out and flirting a bunch.
Decarcha works over his queer feelings for Studio with Cherri, who insists this could be another new thing to try while discovering himself, and eventually he tells Studio how he feels.
Studio is excited to mess around, but becomes distant when he realized Decarcha is looking for something serious. The two have a falling out, not speaking for months, until Studio accidentally shows up as a customer at Decarcha's job as a barista, and keeps awkwardly coming back during his shift. The two start talking casually again and reconnecting as friends, and eventually they both catch feelings and get together properly.
