Jasper’s parents got married in the summer of 1994, when Vanessa was 24 and Marshall was 25. However, they did not have a happy marriage. When Jasper was around two, Vanessa had an affair with a man named Sebastian Rogers (never seen again). Vanessa became pregnant and successfully passed the baby off as their own. Marshall developed a bad drinking problem and began to verbally abuse his wife. When Jasper was around seven, Gerard around five or six, Marshall hit Vanessa for the first time. As much as he apologized, he did it again, and again. Soon, he was abusing her every day. Jasper developed anorexia at around age twelve after Marshall drunkenly called her fat. Gerard developed generalized anxiety at age thirteen. The family pushed him to go to inpatient therapy, but he refused. Finally, after he reluctantly agreed to go see someone, Vanessa told him that Gerard wasn’t his child. This was also news for sixteen year old Gerard, and neither of them took it well. Jasper was seventeen, almost eighteen. Marshall completely lost it. He hit Vanessa so hard that she temporarily blacked out. Gerard, in anger, punched Marshall. Jasper tried to grab her mom and drag her outside. Marshall grabbed Gerard and threw him into the wall. Jasper took the phone and called the police, briefly telling them her address and that they needed to hurry. Jasper hunched over the unconscious body of her mom, sobbing, as Gerard attempted to ward off Marshall, both growing weaker and weaker. The police showed up and when Marshall tried to charge them, they shot him in the leg. They put Vanessa and Gerard in an ambulance and kept Jasper in the front seat, to question her. She told them everything, that he was beating up her mom, the drinking, the constant neglect, even her anorexia. When asked when the last time she ate was, she couldn’t remember. She was exhausted from the events of that night, and so she stayed in the hospital as well. However, she was then put in a mental health ward, so she would become healthier. It was there she met Helena. Gerard was very stressed and had several panic attacks. When Jasper got out, they had the trial for Marshall, and sentenced him to five years in prison. By this time, she was almost eighteen, and was nearly ready to graduate high school - she was a senior, and had five months left of school. Gerard was a junior, and had about a year and a half left. After Jasper graduated, she stayed with her mom, and things slowly got better. While Gerard presented a nice face, his anxiety was getting much worse, and he couldn’t stand seeing his sister struggling to gain weight. He gained a scholarship to a nice school in England, and suddenly announced he was going there. This relapsed both his mother and his sister. Vanessa remained depressed in her room most days, and Jasper began eating less and less. However, a few months after that, she met Edward, Grace, and Kacy. She and Kacy dated for about two years before he disappeared completely. Jasper was 22 at this point. She moved in with Edward and Emily before Edward moved out to live with Vale.
