Summary
It's said that cats have nine lives. And for Berkeley, at least... this is true.
To say that they were... upset to remember all their former lives at once - Lives that had been torn from them without warning, ones which they cherished, which they desperately wanted back - when they were brought into their ninth life, a life of great power and responsibility, would be an understatement. They'd broken down, pleading with the god for answers, for a reason, desperately crying out "Why?" to no avail. And the expectations placed upon them...
It was so much, all at once. So much to take in, lost memories and new duties alike. The weight of the world and its balance on their shoulders, the wisdom of ages in their mind yet trapped in an unfamiliar, childlike body, a horrible feeling that this was wrong, they couldn't handle this... it's really not all that surprising that they would flee.
Such an odd coincidence that a face from one of their previous lives would be the one to greet them in the mortal world.
Or perhaps... this was how it was meant to be all along.
Trivia
- Berkeley's name comes from the surname Berkeley, derived from the Gloucestershire town of the same name and meaning birch lea. Birches symbolize growth, initiation, and renewal in Celtic cultures, while also being associated with Tír na nÓg and the aos sí, giving them connections to fairies and the magical, death, and returning from the grave - A fitting set of connections for the Deity of Rebirth and their given role as the mediator and balance between those of Life and Decay.
- Berkeley lived eight lives before their current one. In order, these were: An ocelot, a cougar, a seal-point Himalayan, a white Bengal tiger, a lioness, a red and white Maine Coon, a leopard cat, and a cream-colored housecat of undetermined breed.
