Gary can resurrect things from the dead. He hates being referred to as "necromancer" because it makes him feel evil

He can only put a soul back in a body if he sacrifices a piece of his own. To bring a body back he needs to sacrifice some of his own body, but only a little. The difference between sacrificing some of his own blood and a sliver of his soul is that his soul won't heal or grow back. 

The things he brings back are more like golems than the people, monsters, or animals they once were, because of their lack of soul. They'll do whatever he says.

He recently created an artificial soul with the help of an alchemist , he's saving it for a special occasion.

It is rumored that the knight Abel has died and was brought back by Gary to work for the royalty without question, in exchange for a pardon on practicing a highly illegal magic. He denies this, as Abel had been "odd" even before the change in royalty and Gary is very young
