A Fire that burned too bright
"'Care for a drink?"
Kei was a powerful necromancer with a reaching reputation. One that wasn't always good, and brought him endless trouble near the end-even if he wasn't evil at all. In the end, it killed him, and the world went on.
Years later, a changeling searching for relics happened upon the ruins of a town said to have an artifact that attracted the undead to it. She knew of the dangers, but had to find out if it was truly there, or if it was just a legend. She found it, along with several undead that found her. With no way out and a voice speaking from the air, she did the only thing she could-made a bargain with this dusty sigil she'd found in a drawer.
Kei accidentally overwrote the changeling's soul with his own, no longer trapped and lingering. Unsure of what year it was, or if anyone was still after him, he set out to regain the level of power he once had, and to throw himself into life once more.Details

Personality
Adventurous
Kei's first life saw him travel far from the court he called his home, always curious to see what's around the bend. He has no set course, and drifts ever towards whatever seems fun.
Charming
While Kei can come across as irreverent or roguish, he will always stop to lend a hand if he thinks he can. Both his disarming looks and his silver tongue have gotten him far, and with luck they'll take him further.
Creative
There's a way around everything, especially with magic at your fingertips. Whether it's invisibility or a swarm of bees, Kei will give it a try-if talking doesn't work first. Usually.
Deceptive
Kei keeps most of his past a secret, set on leaving his old life behind. That he was often present in a noble's court, that he was once a scholar, exactly how he died. There's no harm meant in these secrets, but they make him hard to trust if found out.
High-Spirited
Kei manages to stay upbeat in even the worst of situations, trying to bring others up and keep them from crumbling. If morale is broken, there's not much left-a lesson hard learned, but one that makes Kei try ever harder to keep the smile on his face and others'.
Impulsive
Leap before you look isn't quite right, but it's closer to the path Kei follows than the true saying. Kei tends to do what seems like a good idea, especially so if there's a danger present. A threat eliminated is better than a threat moving towards friends, and if a few bad decisions have to be made to keep them safe, that's just fine with him.
Skills
Necromancy
Kei's new body is not nearly as skilled at sorcery as his old one was. Nonetheless, he can call Avery again-his most powerful spirit, and closest friend.
Shielding
Kei specializes in two things-hitting hard and aggressively protecting. He'll lash out at any who try to get past him, stopping them in their tracks, and if they hit him instead, they'll find frost creeping up their veins.
Eldritch Blast
An ominously glowing orb of pure energy. He's learned to use it to yank enemies towards him and away from his friends-often straight into his sword.

Story
Background
Kei was born into a minor noble family, where he grew up learning arcana and music. While he followed magic more than music, always sneaking off to try a new spell, music always followed him. He found a place in the court as a musician, and his friendly demeanor made him a welcome sight. Kei always wanted more, always wanted to learn and explore and feel the sun warming his skin. In his late teenage years, he set out to wandering on occasion, straying further and further from his home as he grew stronger.
Present
Magic was always fascinating to Kei, endlessly so. He initially studied more arcane spells, arcana specifically-until he found an old book on necromancy, and followed it until he found he could commune with ghosts and spirits of the dead-help them find what they were missing, or help them find rest. Sometimes they would aid him, and sometimes they simply had a story to share. Eventually, he found he could rebind and animate the dead, have them fight alongside him when he needed to call. A favor for a favor, and a requiem to soothe a spirit lost in its rage. After a few years of helping spirits and souls Kei had a large network to call on, and his own abilities kept growing ever stronger.
Unfortunately, it also caught him attention-some of it, not so favorable. There were many who were grateful, but many more who shunned such blatant use of necromancy, calling it blasphemy. As his reputation grew, so did his infamy. He was impish, a rogue, a scoundrel, charming everyone he came across and swaying upstanding citizens.
It's said he could be seen at night, dancing with the dead under the moon.
It started with the occasional attack-at first it was bandits, then a lone assassin, then a small adventuring party that Kei was able to talk down. They were still green, and he had no reason to want to fight them. He learned that someone had set a price on his head-but he never learned who.
Eventually, a group of bounty hunters came for him, when the price grew too great. Too many to fight off, no one who would come to help, cut off from his otherworldly help-In desperation, Kei did the only thing he could. He summoned an army of zombies, tearing up through the ground as the party after him stared on in horror. They were ripped apart, the horde shredding through them as if through paper. It was the most powerful spell Kei had ever cast-one he couldn't control. Before long, they turned on him, and no one remained to hear his screams as they tore him limb from limb. His death was not quick enough to stop him from seeing one of them rip out his heart.
After
Kei had plenty of experience with spirits unable to move on. Most had died violent deaths, while some were simply looking for something so they could move on. Kei never thought he'd be one of them. He stayed stuck to the sigil he'd carried with him, never able to wander too far from where it sat. It ended up in the nearby village, and he was forced to watch as the horde he'd raised tore through every inhabitant. There he lingered, waiting for something-anything-to happen.
Life is boring when you're dead. Kei lost track of time, lost interest in seeing what he could move or do-and he certainly didn't want to go outside and face one of the zombies that had killed him. His sigil sat inside of a desk drawer, and he started to count the days in the dust gathering on the surface.
Eventually, something changed. He heard footsteps, moving with purpose--none of the shuffling and groaning of the undead. A woman burst into the building, slamming the rotting door behind her. It seemed like she was being pursued, if her ragged breathing was anything to go by. That door wouldn't hold them long, when they reached it. Kei stood and watched curiously as she tore the room apart. She was looking for something. She opened the drawer and found it, hand clasping around Kei's sigil right as the first zombie rattled the door on its hinges. He could feel the spark of magic in her through the seal, weak and untrained as it was-and he reached for it. He offered to lend her some of his power, if she'd take him out of there, out of that godforsaken room. As the door fell, she took it.
Kei was never skilled with such magic.
Take him out she did, into her own body and mind. The young changeling was lost, and Kei had no time to ruminate on his mistakes with the zombies pouring into the room. His own power was quickly fading, too much to sustain with such an inexperienced soul-but enough to wipe out the three advancing on him and run.
KKei has yet to find out who his ill-fated savior was, and has only just realized he is no longer human.

Related
Alize
Kei likes alize, and admires his carefree nature. Alize is one of the few who seems to see through Kei's facade, and while Kei doesn't know how to handle it, the part of him that doesn't want to wallow is thankful the wizard looks out for him, even if he doesn't feel he deserves it. Kei worries Alize's fearlessness will get him hurt one day, and hopes he can stop that from happening.
Calluna
Kei sees Calluna as a little sister, and would do absolutely anything to keep her safe. He hopes to see her find her courage one day, and knows the brilliant woman can shine brighter than any would think her capable of. He will stop at nothing to see her back safe from the void.
Eko
Kei doesn't know much about Eko, but he appreciates the bloodlust that seems to be lurking in the ranger. He'd like to spar with her if given the chance, even if he'd most likely lose in his current body. Maybe in a drinking contest? She throws herself into any challenge with gusto, and it's a spirit Kei hopes to mirror.
Titania
Titania has a lot on her plate, and the hostility many show them certainly doesn't help. Kei wants to help where he can, even if it is only offering a shoulder to lean on. Titania was the first to defend him amidst the accusations, and he'll never forget it. As far as he's concerned, if she wants his sword aimed at someone, he'll aim it.
Zhane
Zhane still walks in the sun. He doesn't see the bad in the world, the evil lurking in its heart. Kei sincerely hopes the man stays that way, though that viewpoint is almost alien to him. It keeps him from opening up to Zhane, feeling as if he's looking in through a window. After being controlled and nearly forced to kill him, Kei desperately wants to make amends, but falters every time he tries, unable to look the man in the eye.
Navari
Kei has only known Navari for a few days, but she seems dlike a decent person. He's curious, and certainly suspicious of why she knows so much of them, but so long as she means no harm, perhaps they can be friends. He'd like to play more music with her, should they find the time.
Haemir
Kei and Haemir did not break up peacefully. They didn't see eye to eye, and Kei regrets the words they both spat at each other before parting. His pride keeps him from apologizing and trying again, and so he sends letters in the hopes Haemir will come and find him. Whether it ends in a fight or something else, he doesn't care-even if he's not completely sure it wasn't Haemir that sent out the order to kill him. Despite his uncertainty, he still cares for the man, and would like to see him again. Even if it's with a fist to the face.
