Gunji is a somewhat talented healer and very useful when he's absolutely needed. However, he displays constant laziness and unwillingness to participate in anything that requires a substantial amount of effort. He's fully capable of helping others at a moment's notice but without the proper motivation (money, food, etc) he's loathe to actually be put into action. Gunji has a habit of only doing just the bare minimum for anything asked of him. Going above and beyond the call of duty requires you to pay him more.
He's only been in two relationships in his entire life, taking a more laxidasical approach to romance. Only few have caused him to get serious. Polyamorous by nature, though currently only in one relationship, he's in an open relationship with Robyn Theriot, his husband.

Personality
Gunji is incredibly selfish and childish, often throwing a fit if he does not get his way. He's incredibly lazy when it comes to the needs of others, trying to put off having to do favors as much as possible unless he's going to get something out of it. Despite this, he has a very hard time telling people no, often accepting pretty much any request given to him--often leading him and his friends into a large amount of hassle.
He is incredibly blunt, thinking that being unrelentingly honest is the way to go when talking to others; regardless of the fact that it often makes people upset with him. Selfish, vain, and generally irritating; it's hard to find people who are surprised when Gunji makes enemies. Despite all of his shortcomings, Gunji does manage to be a very caring friend. He will do almost anything for those he cares about, even though it takes a lot of mistakes to get there. There's nothing Gunji loves more than being around those he cares about, and he is an incredibly affectionate person.

Summary
Background & A Realm Reborn
Gunji was born in a traditional village known as Sui-no-Sato. He found his upbringing to be incredibly restrictive started at a young age, often causing trouble for others by wandering as far as he could before he was caught and made to go back to the village. Unable to conform to the conservative idealogy of his town, and being kept at arms length due to his abrasive personality; he decided to leave the moment he'd become an adult; even if it meant he would never be welcome back by those he called his family.
He has two younger siblings, named Yomi and Ugan. Very close with the two of them, despite having quite a large age difference (6 year difference with Yomi, 9 with Ugan), this made it incredibly difficult to make the decision to leave. Ugan, his asocial and quiet brother was the one to give Gunji the final push, encouraging him to go on his own journey and saying that he hated seeing his older brother live a life that made him so unhappy.
Gunji’s parents also encouraged their son. Saying that they could live with being apart from him as long as he could live a life without regrets. Yomi, on the other hand, was far more torn. Upset that her brother was so unhappy with their way of life. Eventually, she relented, giving Gunji a book to read on his journey whenever he got bored.
Once he left, he traveled to Kugane, with the intent to cross to Eorzea. There, he met Kaljah, a small auri woman who would become his best friend. Together they took a boat to the western continent to start their own adventures, splitting up for a short period of time.
Being in Eorzea was a culture shock for someone who had never been outside of the isolated village of Sui-no-Sato, and Gunji spent much of his first year growing accustomed to the continent he now devoted himself to exploring.
During his time with the Scions, Gunji became very protective over Alphinaud. Viewing the young boy as considerably smarter than him when it comes to traditional learning—but incredibly stupid when it comes to social knowledge. He made it his personal mission to make sure Alphinaud doesn’t do anything that would get him seriously hurt.
Heavensward
Once in Coerthas, it didn't take long for Gunji to become smitten with Haurchefant. He didn't stand a chance against the Elezen's positive and warm demeanor. Haurchefant became the first real romantic relationship Gunji had ever had.
Throughout Heavensward Gunji made sure to, once again, keep close to Alphinaud. Fearing that the boy’s regrets with the outcome of ARR might weigh too heavily on him.
He spent his time in Ishgard wary of its citizens, as many viewed Gunji’s scales, horns, and tail, a sign of dravanian blood. Due to the protection of being a ward of the Fortemps house, he was comfortable enough to mostly ignore the looks he got.
After the events of the Vault and the death of Haurchefant, Gunji became incredibly depressed in his mourning. Withdrawing almost completely, only going through the motions required to help end the Dragonsong war.
Stormblood
To say Gunji was disconnected from the events of Stormblood through the first year would be an understatement. He spent much of his free time coping through his own grief in unhealthy mannerisms. He distanced himself from anyone he called a friend as often as he could, only interacting with others in the most detached ways possible.
Gunji continued his work with the Scions and helping liberate Ala Mhigo, but was still only going through the motions. Thinking little of what he was doing and merely going where he was pointed and doing whatever he was told to do.
Around the journey to Othard, Gunji became considerably more responsive, the thought of being near his home managing to catch at least some of his focus. When the notion of helping Sui-no-Sato became a possibility, Gunji at first thought that he would have the courage to attempt to, at least briefly, step into the village he once called home.
The closer they got to Sui-no-Sato, though, the more Gunji's resolve wavered, and he ended up requesting the Scions handle the issue in his childhood home without him while he waited nearby for news of their success.
It was also during the time in Othard that Gunji got to know the second Leveilleur twin better. Much more functional than her brother, Gunji gained a sort of older sibling fondness for Alisaie. Noticing her penchant for recklessness, however, it seems that Gunji is destined to be incredibly protective of both elezen siblings.
He had a strange experience while on the Steppe, seeing au ra so different than what he was used to growing up. Gunji enjoyed greatly learning about the Xaela--though at times it seemed that the differences in scale color and upbringing seemed to clash with certain tribes. Notably the fact that Gunji developed a sort of loathing for one Magnai of the Oronir tribe. Whenever the man would go into his diatribe of the Oronir being chosen of the Dawn Father, Gunji found his eyes glazing over as he'd attempt to calmly and patiently wait for him to stop.
Though mostly detached on the liberation of Ala Mhigo, Gunji ended up putting his all into it. Out of want to do some semblance of good during a state of his own grief, trying to live up to the man who called him a hero with his dying breath.. as well as a respect for Rauhban.
Shadowbringers
Gunji was pulled into the First quite a bit earlier than most of his friends. A year earlier, to be specific. He waited with G'raha's promise that the others would come soon enough, but the more time that passed the more terrified of being along Gunji became. Since the moment he had arrived in Eorzea, Gunji had never been so alone. So used to being surrounded by others, the sudden isolation from those he loved crippled him emotionally.
He threw himself into helping the Crystarium and Novrandt as a whole. Working mostly in the Spagyrics as a healer, but often lending his hand with botany or mining. Anything to keep his mind off of the loneliness that plagued him.

Alphinaud Leveilleur
Gunji met Alphinaud during his journey through the story of ARR. He is incredibly protective of the teen he considers to be a blumbering naive fool. Wanting to see him grow into a respectable person who is somehow capable of taking care of himself, Gunji has silently decided that anyone who tries to bring harm to this tiny imbecile will have to go through him first.
Alisaie Leveilleur
Gunji and Alisaie met at the same time he met Alphinaud, but he didn't get to know the young girl until later. Finding her to be more practically capable than her twin, Gunji still finds her to be stupidly reckless and destined to get herself killed. As such, he has also decided that he will protect her. Basically if any of the twins come to harm, Gunji will go full scorched-earth on Eorzea.
Yugiri Mistwalker
Yugiri and Gunji have known each other the longest of anyone, coming from the same village of Sui-no-Sato. Gunji left after Yugiri did, but did not know what had become of her until meeting her again in Uldah. He respects Yugiri greatly, often going to her to talk when he needs someone who understands the upbringing of Sui-no-Sato.
Haruchefant Greystone
Gunji was once in a romantic relationship with Haurchefant Greystone. He was the first relationship that Gunji had ever been in, and formed his ideals of what a relationship could be. He had never been happier in his life than when he was with Haurchefant, which is why the grief he felt when Haurchefant was killed was so vast.
