Backstory

Laenor is a runaway from an aristocratic family. Escaping an abusive and restrictive home, he made his way to Magnimar to start a new life for himself. Arriving in Magnimar while still wet behind his ears and with little to his name, Laenor resorts to many dubious jobs to earn some pocket change. He took on any task that would provide him with his next meal.

The hustle on the streets for survival was hard and put him in contact with the shady crowds that prowled the back alleys and slums of Magnimar. It was a dog eat dog environment and Laenor found himself often taken advantage of and ripped of whatever little money he had mustered. The hunger that grew with each passing day pushed him into resorting to theft. While Laenor succeeded into swiping food from unsuspecting vendors for some time, he would get more careless each time. Laenor found himself in a particular awkward situation when he was finally caught stealing from the kitchen of Scrivener’s Chant, a tavern owned by an older human wizard named Edius. However, instead of reporting him to the authorities, Edius fed the youngster. "You could have at least gone for the chicken garlic stuffed bread. You do not know what's good for you even if it's right in front of you for the taking, foolish boy." After the meal, Laenor was put to work, taking out the garbage and cleaning the dishes. After the day's work Edius gave Laenor two options: Either he moved in with Edius and worked for his meals and lodging, or he goes out into the streets again to beg and steal. The decision was quickly made and Laenor moved in with Edius while working at the tavern.

One day after returning to the shop from his errands, Laenor finds his mentor in a terrible state, tied up in a chair in the middle of the room, his face and body bloodied and mangled nearly beyond recognition. The tavern had been ransacked and rampaged, the walls covered in bloody lettering that spelled "LIAR". A note reading "We give what is asked, we take what we're owed." was attached to Edius' leg with a dagger. Laenor ran out to seek help, finding a Calistrian mercenary who lend him a hand with carrying the heavily injured elder to the Savoured Sting to nurse him back to health.

While discussing the manner of payment for the treatment, the mercenary that helped them handed Laenor the very same dagger that impaled Edius' leg moments ago. "If your intentions are right, Calistria will be with you," the mercenary said as he touched the Calistrian holy symbol hanging around his neck. These words spiralled Laenor into what would be years of planning and putting his cold retribution to action.

Laenor learned Edius had gotten himself involved with some loan sharks while trying to boost the start-up of his tavern. They had stricken a deal where Edius had to pay back the lent money in the form of monthly payments with elevated interest. The amount that was owed would drastically increase over time until Edius would be almost unable to pay them on a monthly basis. When he raised questions about it, the loan sharks would threaten him with forged papers, blackmailing him for crimes he did not commit. Unable to go to authorities, Edius was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

During the day, Laenor worked at a bar, earning his wage and paying the debt that was still owed by Edius little by little under a pseudonym. By night, he spent hours sending out letters, researching the underground, making friends and keeping company with dirty debt collectors and getting them to disclose their purveyors and those who worked above them. He spitted through the ranks, starting with the lowest henchmen, to the middle-ground subordinates and eventually reaching the top sharks. He managed to make them all talk, usually by their own willingness or through friendly coercion. Laenor soon found himself

With all the evidence he had in tow, Laenor wrote what would be the very last letter to the people that had threatened Edius. "The debt will soon be paid." From that moment on, inspired by the very quill that put the finishing stroke on his exacted revenge, he took on his new name.
