Everben was boasted as one of the Black Kingdom's finest vacation destinations, and in life, it was an attractive place to go in Velia's mind. Little did he know that this would be the last place he would go to while alive, and would be trapped there for the rest of eternity. Everben had a variety of beautiful locations to view--a scenic cliffside, expansive gardens, a large forest whose leaves held a golden tint--and there were rumors that the place was haunted as well. Though not the most adventurous Lyth, it still intrigued him, and he arrived with a couple friends when they rented a couple rooms for the week. All was well, and he was enjoying the break from his otherwise busy life until one night his friend locked him in a dark room as a prank. The door, however, became stuck, and not realizing a murderous spirit resided in that very room, his friend reacted rather calmly to Velia's rising panic and begging to be let out. By the time the door was able to be opened, Velia was already caught in the spirit's grasp, and his friend, while horrified, bolted from the room instead of trying to help.

In his last moments alive, Velia does not remember pain, or fear. Rather, he remembers the intense betrayal of seeing his friend turn tail and flee while he was being killed. As a spirit, he was not allowed peace--the ghost who had killed him, who he later discovered was named Pati, revealed that he was trapped in Everben just like all the other spirits there. And as it turned out, there were quite a few--over the years, more would join their company through one mean or another. None of them were quite sure why, but they simply settled on the fact that the land was cursed. Velia can't stand being in the house--between his murderer residing there and the numerous deaths that followed his own, including both of his friends, who he refuses to face even decades later--so he spends most of his time out in the gardens, enjoying the only life that's allowed to thrive on these cursed lands.
