Hero Stats

Hero Name: Snapdragon

Quirk: Flower Trap

Suzuran is able to create flowers on non-living surfaces. His flowers function as beacons, and he is able to tell if anyone is within a 10 foot sphere of the flower, and how close they are to it, allowing him to maintain a wide area of surveillance and prevent surprise attacks. The flowers also function as pressure traps - if something lands on the flower, its petals and the surrounding web of vines snap shut and lash around the intruder. The closed flower thus traps any enemy that is caught. Suzuran can also close, as well as open, the traps on his own command. Because the closed traps are hard to break through, he can deliberately close them around himself or allies for protection. Small flowers function like bear traps, while large flowers can ensconce an entire person.

Limitations

  • Suzuran has to remain relatively close to his flowers; getting too far away will cause the flowers to wither and die. He can cover a 300-foot radius, though the further away he is from a flower, the harder it is to pinpoint exactly how close someone is. If the flower is in the next room, he can tell where they are almost exactly, but if the flower is 300 feet away, he only has the vague sense that there’s someone near it. Once he moves more than 300 feet away from a flower, it will die.
  • A barrier such a wall will muffle his flower’s senses; he can’t sense through walls. He’d be able to sense through the gaps in a fence, say, but not through the actual fence posts.
  • The flowers are organic, so they can be burned. This is the most sure-fire way to escape one.
  • Creating and maintaining flowers drains his energy, and the more flowers he has active, the faster his energy drains. Large flowers drain energy twice as fast as small flowers. At the moment, he can maintain 8 small flowers, or 4 large flowers, or a combination of the two, before the energy consumption gets too much for him. He has discovered that sugar is an easy way to keep his energy stores up, so he’s often seen eating candy in the field.
  • The flowers are visible, meaning you can avoid them once you know what to look for, especially larger flowers. That said, he can create traps that look like any kind of flower that he's familiar with, so it’s hard to spot a pattern.
  • He creates flowers by spitting on the ground while his quirk is active, and the flower sprouts from there. This isn’t a drawback, it’s just gross. It does mean that he can only create flowers within spitting distance though. There is also a delay of about 15 seconds for flowers to generate from his spit, so it’s harder to use in rapid combat.

Primary Course Focus: Rescue (he’s also taking recon courses on the side)

Personals

Personality

Suzuran is a good person, he just always seems to have woken up on the wrong side of the bed. He’s crabby and usually in a bad mood, which means he can also get rude or aggressive with relatively little provocation. He’s got a chip on his shoulder and a drive to prove himself. He doesn’t settle for second best, and he doesn’t back down from a challenge. He’s blunt and doesn’t beat around the bush - he gets right to the point without wasting words. He says what he thinks and feels, and is pretty honest. If you’re looking for tact or emotional sensitivity, Suzuran is definitely not your guy.

Despite all of this, he’s a pretty decent guy. He’s got a sort of rough charisma, and if he warms up to someone, he’s a good friend. Being comfortable around someone takes away that drive to prove himself, which means his aggression goes way down. He’s still blunt, though, that’s just who he is. It can easily come across as weird awkwardness, especially if he’s actually trying (and probably failing) at being tactful.

He’s surprisingly smart for an angry brute, and has a good head for strategy. He wants to work together and get the job done. He’s willing to collaborate on plans, but if someone on his team is uncooperative, Suzuran’s first instinct is to leave them behind. Still, he wants to work together. He wants to be a friendlier and more approachable person, but he’s just not, so this is the Suzuran you’ve got to deal with.

History

Suzuran is the eldest child of a wealthy businessman and a celebrated ikebana artist. His two younger sisters came along later, and it was generally expected that all three children would learn ikebana, and that Suzuran would follow in his father’s footsteps and inherit the family business. His parents were well-meaning, but he grew up very restricted, with his life controlled and monitored. He actually liked flower arranging, but he resented having his future decided for him from the moment he was born.

His parents used expensive therapy sessions to figure out what his quirk was at a young age, each hoping he would inherit theirs so they could steer him toward their own profession. The ability to create flowers, as it was discovered, looked like his mother was the winner here, and it gave her an excuse to push him to pursue ikebana. Suzuran would later realize that he could sense things through the flowers he’d created for his arrangements. He also accidentally discovered that he could close them like a trap (he caught his own finger in one once), though he didn’t need to tell his parents.

As he grew into adolescence, he really began to chafe against his home life. He didn’t express it at home, though, and his parents never figured out why he was so moody. But he acted out at school. He talked back to teachers, skipped classes, and began hanging out with the delinquents. Home was so restrictive that he used school as an outlet, and as a result, his grades plummeted and he became a known problem child. By the end of middle school his teachers just saw him as a lost cause, and his parents clamped down harder on him to combat his unruliness.

In high school he often snuck out at night with the other delinquents, and by this point he was their de facto ringleader. They went on night time ‘adventures’: graffiti, vandalism, and petty theft. Frustrated teenagers taking their frustrations out on the world around them. Though there were a few near misses, none of them were ever arrested, which just emboldened them. When Suzuran was 16, one adventurous night they stumbled across a mugging in-progress. The other kids ran from the scene, but Suzuran jumped in and used his quirk to shield the victim before taking up a discarded board to drive off the stunned mugger.

With the mugging foiled, this band of idiot teenagers decided that they could do this hero thing. No pro heroes had stepped in to save this person, but a teenager had! Suzuran’s quick thinking cemented his position as the group’s leader, and the band of delinquents morphed into a band of would-be vigilantes. They’re cocky, though, and not only did the rest of them balk at the first sign of danger, but Suzuran had no idea how lucky he’d been. He’d only ever used his quirk for flower arranging; he had no idea how to properly use it in dangerous situations.

So for the most part they just ‘patrolled’ around their neighbourhood looking for ‘villains’, and there weren’t any. Until there were. The kids actually stumbled onto a bona fide supervillain in the middle of an armed robbery, and Suzuran, hopped up on delusions of strength, went to go stop him! Bad move. The end result was Suzuran kidnapped and held hostage by the villain who assumed he was a sidekick or a pro hero student or something. A real pro hero does rescue him and defeat the bad guy. Suzuran’s bravery was lauded, and the hero got a great photo-op for saving this kid. But the experience only traumatized Suzuran, as did the publicity of it, and his parents decided that they had been too lenient with him, and bore down on him harder.

Despite his trauma, this convinced Suzuran that he did want to be a hero and save people, but he knew he needed to do it the right way, so he started thinking about pro hero university courses. But his parents gradually shifted their attention to his sister Azami as a more suitable heir and sort of discarded Suzuran, and his teachers saw him as a lost cause. Only his delinquent friends were there for him, and even they had pulled back a little after that night. He expressed his desire to be a hero to two people: his baby sister Kiku, and the school counselor. The counselor, understanding the danger of that line of work and Suzuran’s trauma, gently tried to dissuade him from it, but he only saw this as betrayal and yet another authority figure giving up on him. This only galvanized his dream.

But Kiku, who he thought he could trust, told Azami, who he knew he couldn’t, and she told their parents. Oh, their parents were livid, but Suzuran had already made up his mind. He cut a compromise: if the pro hero thing didn’t work out, he’d come home and join the family business. But he intended to make it work out. And with that, he left home for an internship with the same hero who rescued him years ago. Though Suzuran’s grades were bad, this hero had direct knowledge of who Suzuran really was, and gave him a chance. He spent over two years with that agency, training and learning to utilize his quirk in the field. He got plenty of real experience and began earning a reputation as a pro hero in the making, and his time with the agency was more productive than anything he’d bothered trying to achieve in high school.

His mentor recommended that he apply to a hero training university program so he could get some credentials under his belt, which would go a long way in building a career as a hero. Several applications were successful, and the university he decided on was Schuyler. And so, he left for America, for a fresh start in a new country.

Extras

  • He started bleaching his hair after his very publicized rescue in an effort to keep people from recognizing him. His natural hair colour is dark brown. In high school everyone thought he was doing it to look like a delinquent. Still, after so long with blond hair, he didn’t want to go back to his natural colour.
  • He almost always has a lollipop in his mouth. Even when he’s working. If he bites down on the lollipop and crushes it, you’re in danger.
  • Because his quirk is better suited to reconnaissance and defense than offensive combat, his hero mentor trained him in various types of martial arts, and he’s a capable fighter with his fists and with weaponry.
  • He learned English during his internship and speaks it fluently. His mother tongue is Japanese.
