Kamuy Tanchouzuru was a young crane yokai whom was taken in by the God Hachiman at a young age, after the God found him wandering lost, and confused. He was raised into priesthood by Hachiman's closest attendant, Lady Kiri. He was to be the sole yokai seeing over one of Hokkaido's Hachiman Shrines. The people were to never see him but young Shrine Maidens who- against the God's wishes took a glimpse at him would tell their families of the 'Snow White Angel of Hokkaido" that lived at the shrine.

Though being a Head-Priest in training is a lonely job, and Lady Kiri often prevented both Kamuy from seeing his people; and the people from seeing Kamuy. The only interactions Kamuy really had with them was when the Shrine Maidens would bring in the offerings for his dinner, but even then their faces would be covered and they would quickly disappear back into their own worlds once the food was secure.

One fateful day his world changed. He was studying under Hachiman's notes, filling out paperwork as he was trained to do when his concentration broke from an odd, new sound. He went to check it out and found a second child, training to use a bow. This was his first time meeting a snake yokai, who would soon become his close friend. This child lacked a name and was unable to properly introduce themselves during this first meeting, so Kamuy gave him one; Uwabami Habu.

This meeting was not supposed to happen at this time, and upon seeing the two together, Lord Hachiman and Lady Kiri seperated them. Lady Kiri taking Kamuy back to his post. She explained to him that this snake yokai was a dangerous spirit who had harmed many humans as a 'joke' and was currently repenting, forced to take a more human form to make up for the sins he committed. Hachiman had only shown him little mercy and was giving him one more chance at life.

Eventually, the decision was left to Kamuy as his final test before officially becoming a fully-fledged Priest. Would he punish Uwabami to death for his crimes? Or would he take on Uwabami's crimes as his own as his master? Kamuy thought long and hard about this, as if Uwabami acted out again, Uwabami surely would have to die under his hands, or he would perish besides him. Kamuy decided on taking Uwabami on as his guard.

They lived a rather uneventful life for a number of years. After the official cermonies appointing Kamuy head of the Hokkaido Shrine, Hachiman left on a pilgrimage of his own and took Lady Kiri with him. Though things were peaceful at the shrine at the top of the mountain, unrest was growing in the people who lived below.

One unnormally hard winter, the people had finally snapped. Unbeknownst to Kamuy himsef, the legends of the 'Snow White Angel' at the top of the shrine had morphed over the days, years; no, generations of humans, into the fact that Kamuy was no Priest, no Angel, but rather the God of the shrine. The hard winter was the last straw. Snowstorms ravaged the fields in mid-fall, causing great famine. The peoples were starving, but in their minds the Gods at the top caused this, and were probably laughing at their suffering.

Waking up one day from a deep hibernation, Uwabami slipped out to visit town, hearing the villagers dying pleas, though he did not hear the full story. After being told story after story, he sided with the villagers over his friend and took off. He was mad that his friend wasn't doing anything to help, and decided he would make it his own duty to bring food to the people as part of his journey to repent, even if it killed him.

The villager's anger continued until they snapped. Picking up their weapons they charged towards the shrine to finally give that false 'God' a piece of their mind. Tanchou, who just woke up for the day himself, was surprised to see bright lights scattered in the horizon. Though this light was not the stars, but flaming arrows coming in his direction. Revealing himself to the people for the first time, they all started to chant and quickly became even more hostile. Kamuy's last memories of being a Shrine Priest was flying in the sky over his shrine, watching as it, and the path down to the village went up in flames.

He could not be 'Kamuy Tanchouzuru' any more.
