Hundreds of years ago before Nell gained her powers of transmutation, a lot of the crystals she charmed for others came from a mine on Sinset island, and Lou was the main member of The Magic tasked with retrieving the crystals. The island has always been owned and taken care of by a family with no magic ability, so at first they tried to compromise but the family didn't want any part in it. Lou used his magic to fly to the island and lift crystals off of it in order to bring back to The High City. Nell was under the impression that they were legally retrieved so she didn't have any problem with it until she went to take some for herself and was attacked by one of the family members. She explained the situation and it lead to a very large feud between The Magic of The High City. Nell eventually left the city and settled her own livingspace lower on the mountain and honed her transmutation abilities to make her own crystals. Even after this, though, Lou has been known to rob the crystal mine when tasked by people as some creatures (including him) believe you cannot substitute for the real thing. They are 100% the same but opinions can take you far.
Lou is a snake with feathers around his neck and at points around his lower body! He likes to accessorize with different colored bows!
