Svekt's father Lasramok was never a team player. He followed orders to the letter of the law but not the spirit, and was constantly resisting the  psychic influence of his colony's hivemind. When he had a clutch of  tadpoles (all mind flayers reproduce by parenthogenesis once or twice in their lives,) he foisted one away to raise individually instead of surrendering them all to the hivemind. This resulted in the very unique  circumstances of Svekt's upbringing: raised by a single parent, and never connected to the hivemind. While this resulted in Svekt having a more concrete sense of self than other mind flayers, it also makes him feel very alone. He isn't quite good at being a human, but he also doesn't feel like he does a good job of being a mind flayer.
Now that Lasramok has parted with his colony, bringing his son with him, the two have resorted to powerful magic to keep their identities hidden in order to assimilate with humanoid society.
