Their mom died somewhat recently, and their dad's away because of work. None of the other kids in town really like Reed. They're going through some stuff.
Reed publicly announced to the other neighbor kids that they were going to "fight the demon" with zero intent of actually doing it, just to see how the rest of them would react. Things don't go as planned.

- When creating Reed I basically went "what kind of person would make the ideal friend to Aster"...and then I turned around and created the complete opposite. (Reed will be a good friend though...someday).

Reed constantly struggles with the fact that Aster actually likes them as a person, versus the knowledge that if Aster could actually have lots of friends he wouldn't necessarily still hang out with Reed. (Reed thinks way too hard for a ten-year-old).
