That's the thing about fate- even if we can't change the big picture, our choices can alter the details. that's how we make our own mark.

To Amery, the Order is cruel and unkind. It has stolen every member of her family away from her, from her oldest brother to her youngest sister. Their siblings, their cousins, even their father- mages, all, all sent away from their home to the prison of Namarast, leaving them alone to manage their businesses, their estates. For one equine, it was too much. They lost everything when bills became due, when their family's past debts became too much for one equine to bear alone, and it became easier to fade into obscurity.

Now, though- she has purpose. They free those that they can from the Order's clutches, ferreting mages into the oblivion she was reborn from. And, in the future, perhaps the Order will fall- and with it that detestable Archon.

Personality

Amery is a generally an outwardly level-headed individual, knowing when to speak and when to hold her tongue, when to say a few words to convince someone to help and when to let a situation simmer. She generally doesn't openly stir the pot, and can be quiet and mysterious to those who don't know her intimately- which is most people.

Having grown up as noble-adjacent, Amery is polite and silver-tongued, used to the finer things in life but also knowing what they will and will not do to keep food in their belly and a cloak on their back. Persuasive and cunning, Amery will say and do what they must to reach the outcome that they desire.

However, they can be ruthless in their pursuit of the aforementioned desired outcome, and tend to have a moral compass that is skewed quite far to the amoral side of ethics. They are also prone to be dogmatic, especially when it comes to the Order, and hostile towards those that stand in the way of what they want.

Despite her (many) faults, Amery can also be kind and caring to those she trusts, which is why it is so easy to pose as Tiffany's aide. She is loyal to her loved ones and her cause, and overly adaptable to fit any role she needs to fill- something she learned on the streets of Faline.

History

Amery was not always Amery. Oh, no, she chose that name when she reemerged from the black emptiness of obscurity. When she was born, she was Bellamy Coulbrandt, one of the younger children of an incredibly wealthy businessman. While the family was not noble, not in the slightest, they had enough coin to prosper, to provide for themselves and their staff, and investments in well-to-do trading ventures between Ivras and Siregal, and some between Ivras and Nymene.

The family's downward trend began with the 1215 revolution in Siregal. Thousands upon thousands of gold were lost overnight, and the family began to downsize. Their smallest estate was sold, staff were dismissed, and the family began to cut back on spending. Then in 1223, the monster of Mirror Bay destroyed the trade depot containing their final trading ships. More estates were sold. The staff was reduced to a skeleton crew, and the family began to worry. Their only income came from a few businesses near their final estate- not nearly enough to live off of. Marriages were secured, with the distant cousins being married off or left to fend for themselves. Bellamy's mother died from the stress- for she had always been in poor health, and had required the gold that Bellamy's father had produced to pay for the healer- and Bellamy's father went prematurely grey.

And then the magic struck.

Person after person in the Coulbrandt family was whisked away to Namarast after discovering their magic, taking away yet another worker for the few family businesses that remained. More businesses were sold, as they could no longer afford their upkeep, and had no more staff to maintain them. The gilded years of Bellamy's youth were gone, and their father- the last family Bellamy had left outside of Namarast's prison walls- developed his magic in 1230. He was whisked away, leaving the twenty-year-old Bellamy alone to handle a dying fortune.

They did not have the business acumen of their father. As one of the younger children, their role would have been to marry into a wealthy family- perhaps even lower nobility, if the fortune had lasted- not take over the business. Although they tried desperately to keep things afloat, the Coulbrandt fortune was gone, hemorrhaging uncontrollably as debt after debt became due. In time, the investors- some of whom were researchers in the Order- came and demanded that they paid up. When they could not, they raided the last estate, taking all of the family's belongings, anything of value. They tried to take the house, but Bellamy's father had hidden the deed- so instead they took everything in it.

Bellamy looked around at the shambles her home was in, bagged a few belongings remaining- some pictures, some scraps of cloth, an old cloak two sizes too small from three years past- and left.

Two years later, in 1232, a young equine named Amery appeared out of the blue one day on the streets of Mead. Although she appeared quite well educated, no one knew of her past, except for the rumors that she had been living on the streets of Faline, doing whatever it took to get by. Those rumors were always accompanied by rolled eyes and hushed whispers, as if keeping food in her belly deserved shame. And to her past self, it would have- but not Amery.

You see, she had thought long and hard during her years of obscurity. She had had enough of the Order taking what it deemed its own. The Order had been the final blow to her family's fortune, the cause of so much of Amery's grief. So she found a way to ensure that the Order was weakened. Posing as the aide to Tiffany, she now skulks the streets of wherever she is needed, aiming to move mages out from the grasp of the Order.

Perhaps one day they will be lucky, and see the Order crumble from within.
