In a nutshell, Alfie's deal is that he was raised in a church sanctum (kind of like an orphanage meets a catholic school class?) for the in-universe goddess of crafting and innovation. He spent his late teen years and adulthood doing a series of apprenticeships with blacksmiths and tinkerers, like the rest of the sanctum, though he struggled to perform as well as his peers. All the while, he pushed himself to try to become a prolific inventor, as the church taught him he should-- and that he'd be a worthless waste of space and resources otherwise.
He burned through twenty years trying to accomplish this. Did not succeed. In his late thirties he finally realized that the whole theocracy is a self-serving sham designed to profit off of the grueling labor of its followers. Lost his shit, quit his job, and IMMEDIATELY got snatched up and recruited by an anti-church spy organization.
Alfie is an anxious, bitter dude, but at least now he has friends to help him work through his religious trauma. He even somehow fell in (fully reciprocated!?!) love with one of his fellow spies, a tall, beautiful tiefling who could kick his ass but doesn't because they both actually respect each other. Overall his new gig is an A+, 10/10, five stars-- he might die on the job at any given time, but it's still way better than sitting in a pew or at a workbench all day
