Mr. Cobalt,

We are requesting your personal assitance on a recent case that has come to the attention of our Chief Detectives. A string of unusual deaths has been occuring across Jabberwock, and an associate has informed us that your particular personal skill set may be an asset to our investigation. We ask that you engage in utmost discretion, even within your department, as we have no desire to alarm the public, and, as of now, this information is HIGHLY classfied. Please report promptly to the office of Dt. Tyler Adair on the third floor.

Regards.

-email recieved by Victor Cobalt 1 week after the murder of Red Doe.

Vex was called by his superiors to work on a highly classified case. The specific skills referenced were his robotics background, which would prove highly useful, though he had no idea of this. Going to the directed office led him to prperly meet Tyler Adair, a somewhat-prickly detective and his partner for the case. The two began to investiagte with one another, with varrying levels of enthusiasm about collaborating.

Seeing the crime scenes confirmed the odd nature of them, most essentially, the lack of a body despite all signs of a homicide taking place. The investigation lead the pair to the government archives, seeking the assistance of the archivist, the highly-anxious but well-meaning Maya Astor. With her pointers, Vex and Tyler were able to find some old case files to look over.

The murders continued to increase in number, with each case stranger than the last. No bodies--but proof of them disapearing. Evidence of knife struggles, but no murder weapon. Leads that went nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Strangest of all, the growing evidence that the inarguably non-threatening Maya had something to do with all of it...

Vex was born in Emerald, Texas to Alistair and Madeline Cobalt. He has one sister, Marla Faith Cobalt, older than him by 3 years. Growing up, he was also very close with his cousins, Hailey and Harley Anton. Both Cobalt parents were scientists, with his mother specializing in enviormental control and agriculture and his father specializing in robotics and Ai.

Alistair Cobalt's work was always somewhat of a mystery, even to his family and co-workers. What did get published was indisputably brilliant, and frequently improved the lives of Jabberwock's citizens. However, there was a great deal that didn't get published. Allthough there is no confirmation, Vex and his mother both heavily suspect that research to be what led to his death. When Vex was eight years old, an alleged lab accident caused Alistair's lab to burn down, killing him and destroying the remainder of his research. This event caused Vex to form a lifelong fixation on learning to control fire.

After Alistair's death, Madeline's already eccentric nature became more and more sporadic and absent-minded. She still loved her children deeply, but Marla managed her younger brother and cousins for most of their lives. 3 years after the event, Madeline accepted a position at the University of Jabberwock, Bandersnatch and she, Vex and Marla moved countries to live in Jabberwock City.

Vex took an immediate liking to Jabberwock. While attending school, he met Zachary Schmidt and Komira Lumiere, two other foreign students. The three became close friends, and he and Zach dated from their junior year of highschool halfway through their freshman year of college, before breaking it off on fairly poor terms (though they have since reconciled. He and Komira continue to be close. Vex chose to attend college in Jabberwock as well, and was accepted at the University of Jabberwock, Brillig, considered a powerhouse for STEM careers.

Vex graduated from UJAB at age 22 with a double bachelors in forensic science and robotic engineering. He went on to do his masters in forensic science. He was hired by the Jabberwock Central Government as a criminal forensicist pretty much straight out of graduate school, in part due to his intriguing graduate research and in part due to his father's legacy and reputation. As of the beginning of CoM, he is pursuing a PhD, and has been a government employee for just over a year. He is on friendly terms with most of his co-workers, especially his fellow scientists and the detectives who work closley with his department. However, he has a reputation for being an extremely focused employee, and isn't known to socialize much outside of work. He's also responsible for more than one dramatic lab incident, due to his curious nature and desire to tinker.

During his time in the workforce, there haven't been too many major incidents. The most noteable issue has been the alleged collapse of the gang Chimera, which rose to power nearly ten years prior off of stolen mage artifacts. However, that is soon to change.

Spoiler alert: the robot serial murder thing doesn't trigger a full apocalypse. In the aftermath, Vex shifts his PhD focus and becomes a robotics professor. He also goes to a lot of therapy. At some point within the next ten years, he marries Tyler Adair, and the two of them aquire three children. I say aquire because they were all adoptions that just sort of happened. Their first and youngest is Avery Adair, who has unexpected mage blood giving her bug-related powers (to Vex's mild horror). Their second and third are twins Lilly "Trouble" Adair and Tyler "Terror" Adair (jr.) They are scene kids and general menances to civilized society.
Alternate Universes/Timelines [CLASSIFIED]

*there's a running joke that at least half of our aus end badly for Vex. He just always gets f'd over smh

Modern AU: a mostly happy, fluffy world set in modern-day Canada. Also includes a college/university au. It mostly exists for AU character interactions.

Bad End Timeline (also known as AMAU or the arranged marriage au): one bad relationship between Tyler Adair and Maya Astor butterfly effects into an alternate universe in which at least 3 people die and no less than ten friendships are permanently ruined. In this AU, Vex's boyfriend gets stabbed to death, his crush is married, and he's a little more prone to arson than normal.

Timeloop AU:Literally just remembered this one exists. Exactly what it sounds like;Vex Tyler and Maya get stuck in a timeloop. Instead of several months to save the world, they have one day.

Danganronpa AU: What it sounds like. [SPOILERS] Vex dies in the fourth murder thanks to Tyler (and Tyler's convinient amnesia)

HP AU:put as many gay and trans ppl into hogwarts as possible. The main sort of timeline takes place during Vex's 5th year in roughly the Maurader's era (only setting-wise, canon hp characters don't exist) Vex is a Hufflepuff who liks potions ans otherwise vibes.

PJO AU: this one doesn't like, REALLY exist because we've only talked about it a couple times. Vex is a son of Aphrodite though, probably.

Modern Royals AU: AU where Vex is the second child of a royal family, Tyler is his bodyguard, and Maya is the reluctant assasin hired to take him out. The people that hired Maya want to start a war, and the easiest way to do it is to pin Vex's murder on another kingdom. This au is mostly just Tyler going through it I'm ngl. Not like, incredibly modern, mostly called that to distinguish it from the Fantasy Royals Au, but they do have phones and stuff so.

Fantasy/Dragon Royals AU: Ok in this one Vex IS the heir to the throne, and Tyler is the heir to a rival kingdom. Yes of course there's enemies to lovers thanks for asking. Honestly this one isn't about them though, it's about Remus, Eli, Briar and Numa, and also about cool dragon designs.

Daedalus Timeline/AU: This one honestly isn't an AU, Vex is just also a minor character in Daedalus. He's a young councilmember and a childhood friend of Komira's.

Supernatural (creatures) AU: Human Tyler works as a monster-hunting detective, completely unaware that literally everyone he works with is a monster of some kind. Vex is a vampire, and doesn't do a great job of hiding it, much to the irritation of much older and more careful vampire Komira, who Tyler accuses constantly of being one. Maya is a ghost because a bookshelf in the archives fell on her and she decided she would literally rather die than call for help.

1920s (but in the future) AU: Another Daedalus-adjacent universe, socialite Komira Lumiere goes missing under mysterious circumstances, leaving her fiance Vex to approach Detective Tyler Adair. This one is Daedalus characters and mafia-centric.

History/War AU: In the canon timeline, there was a war between magic users and non-magic users. This au boots the main cast back in time to the creation of Jabberwock. It's a pretty sad au, I don't think any of the main three survive.

Apocalypse/War AU: In a similar vein to the War AU, this one throws the main cast into the future, where the land humanity has tamed finally flips its shit and starts rebelling, with plants ready to throw hands with you at every turn.

Mr. Jensen,

I meant what I said at the Sarif Manufacturing Plant today. You saved my life. In more ways than one. When those gunmen took my Josie away, I thought...

Well. You probably know what I thought. Please, let me repay you. Josie and I are back home safe in our apartment -- we live in a 3rd floor condo on Brooklyn Court. You can find the entrance behind the 2nd Street Gas Station. Stop by next time you're in the city and I'll have something for you.

Sincerely,

Greg Thorpe

[ Noteable Relationships ]

ADAIR, Tyler

JWPD Detective

Relationship: Allegedly Romantic

Tyler and Vex were both assigned to investiagte the string of connected murders occuring within Jabberwock city. After the case was suddenly dropped, the two continue to spend time together, claiming they became romantically involved during the case. But, is this the truth, or simply a ruse to diguise them poking around classified information? Or perhaps its a little more complicated than that...

ASTOR, Maya

JWPD Archivist

Relationship: Coworkers

Well before the murders, Maya and Vex were on friendly terms. His department often requires files from old cases and additonal information, and his cheerful demeanor broke down some of her general anxiety around others. However, something about this most recent case seems to have changed their attitudes about one another. Whether it's for better or worse has yet to be determined.

LUMIERE, Komira

Secretary, JWPD Forensics

Relationship: Close Friends

To the untrained eye, Komira and Vex's friendship seems entirely illogical. Komira isn't known for being the friendliest or kindest of the JWPD staff, and has a strong (and very much returned) dislike for Tyler Adair. However, her callous comments seem to slide right off of Vex, and she can be shockingly protective of him when properly provoked. It's clear that some event in their past connects them, but neither of them seem eager to share the details.

COBALT, Marla

Known Eco-Terroist

Relationship: Siblings

Marla Cobalt is Vex's older sister, who has...deviated from the family leagcy. After coming into conflict with their mother over her position as an agricultural consultant, Marla began to get involved with radical groups and spaces that encourage a forceful return to the nature that was tamed by Jabberwock City. While she isn't known to be particularly violent or otherwise destructive, she is gradually becoming an issue for this city's government. Although somewhat distant, Vex still claims a fondness for his sister, though he also claims to not condonme her actions. Whether this is genuinely true or if he enables her behavior is unknown.

SCHMIDT, Zachary

Physician, consultant

Relationship: Close Friends, Exes

Zach is a young doctor and frequent consultant to the JWPD forensics department. His advice comes at Vex's reccomendation, and he's the first call made about any strange cadavers (and recently, there's been a lot of them.) He and Vex have a shared romantic history, but neither of them seem keen on reminiscing. Regardless, he seems like a very loyal friend, and that makes him suspicious.

HAWTHORNE, Eli

Bartender/Private Security

Relationship: Friends, Exes

Eli's existence in Vex's life is a funny thing. Another former flame, Eli hasn't kept in touch much. However, Eli is an old friend of Tyler's, and the detectivr seems to value his opinion a lot. Vex respects Eli's character and his dedication to his work, as...ambiguous in nature as it is.

CAIN, Josh

Human Resources, JWPD

Relationship: Coworkers

Vex and Josh are both bubbly, cheerful morning people who choose to see the best in others. Vex despises Josh. He finds his personality incredibly grating and overwhelming. He does not see the irnoy in this.

KING, Hunter

Detective, JWPD

Relationship: Coworkers

If it weren't for Tyler, Hunter would be the detective Vex knows best. Hunter's laid-back, easy manner makes him an easy person to hang out with, and they share a similar sense of humor. However, Hunter has a bit of an interesting reputation, and Vex isn't quite sure what to do with it.

FAE, ALICE

Secretary, JWPD Investigations

Relationship: Coworkers

Alice is a secretary for the detective's office. She and Vex are friendly, but they don't know each other very well. No one knows Alice very well.

FORENSICS STAFF

JWPD Forensics

Relationship: Coworkers

The forensics staff consists of many employees, including Jullian Clyde and Violete Grass. This analysis groups them together because they all have a smiliarly pleasant but distand relationship with Vex. They describe him as somewhat eccentric but highly intelligent and dedicated to his work. One might wonder whether Vex has truly made a close friend since he began work at the JWPD.
