Graves came from a labs, hence why he is such a strange hybrid of species and even within that he doesn't know exactly what creatures he's made up of. This isn't something that he likes to focus on, he's just himself, it doesn't matter what he's made up of, he's just Graves. He does NOT want to be referred to as an experiment in anyway.
They only thing they will ever bring up from their time in the labs in Anthrax, who he considers family even though the two aren't related in anyway.
Right after he left the labs, Graves was left in a bit of a flux, he'd never existed in the real world before and he didn't really know what to do. He spent a lot of time just wondering around trying to learn things and adapt, his personality was having big changes during this time. He was trying to find himself, but he was also not completely 'finished' when he left.
This manifests in some of his behaviours, as well as his personality, he likes to flex and extend his hands when remaining still for a long time. Sometimes it also just gets the need to stretch some of ghos bones, feeling as if they're not in his body correctly.
Graves has been living his own life for a few years now, having been able to make a few friends and control his behaviour to blend partially into society, he has no want or need to be what they consider as 'normal', however. He seeks out new information to learn, he loves to further develop his knowledge and hopefully find others who don't look at him differently for who and what he is.
