kou was born into a filthy rich family in kyoto, japan. he is the sole 'heir' of his father's (hiroshige) criminal empire, however his life has been swathed with scandal since the beginning.

it started with his serial-womaniser father. hiroshige divorced his previous wife, hisae, to marry his mistress, kaho, when she fell pregnant with kou. hisae remained in the picture alongside kaho, reluctant to let go of the life that hiroshige had lavished her with. as a result, kou grew up with two mothers who were often at wits end with one another, but cared for him equally. kou loved them both, but understood that it was his father who had the final call on all things. in between the meeting rooms filled with suited "friends", cigar smoke and endlessly-flowing drinks, kou learned that his father had control over more than just "his women".

kaho always remembered the rule to keep the doors to the meeting rooms closed, but hisae always seemed to forget. this is how kou first learned that his father's suited friends bowed to him, but hiroshige never returned the sentiment. they brought him "gifts" in black briefcases, presented to him like an offering to a deity at a shrine. they stopped speaking when hiroshige opened his mouth, as if his decree were their mantras. hiroshige sat atop a hierarchy that demanded total respect, especially from kou and his mothers.
