Marino is a half-human half-vampire, also called a dhampir. He was born to a vampire and a human doctor who studies vampire physiology. Marino’s conception was considered an anomaly, as was his birth because of how low his survival chances were. As an infant, Marino quickly became a problem for his parents, particularly his mother. She worked with vampires all the time but was unpaired for how quickly he developed a taste for blood, primarily hers. She was bitten by him several times and became concerned as he grew that he might hurt her badly. His father decided to move them into his coven until he learned to control himself. It took several years for Marino to learn to behave. At the same time, he began to learn to fear himself because he might hurt someone he loved. He and his mother moved out of the coven right before Marino was to start school. His mother wanted to prepare him for life with his human peers in school and began raising him independently. Marino was well-liked for most of his early years of school. The children around him were curious about him and much friendlier than the adults he had to deal with even as a child. Many parents were outraged by Marino’s inclusion in the all-human school and petitioned to have him removed multiple times. Each time, the school rejected the request. As much as his mother tried to prevent him from finding out he was unwanted at school by the parents, Marino knew from the kids he played with. Thus began a long trend of pretending to be human. Once the hysteria surrounding Marino’s mere presence in school died down, he was left mostly to his own devices and had become quite popular amongst his peers. This popularity was short-lived, however. When Marino was 8, a boy in his class asked him if he could suck the boy’s blood like a real vampire. Marino had fangs and had seen his father do it once or twice. Marino was warned when he was younger never to attempt to feed on another person until he’d grown up because he could hurt someone if he didn’t know what he was doing. Being eight and believing he was old enough to handle biting another person, the boy bit into the boy’s neck, causing him to bleed profusely. The boy lived, but he, the spectating children, and Marino were all traumatized. Because of the incident, Marino was expelled from school and transferred to another. His actions from his old school would continue to haunt him at his new school. Rumors spread about him, most telling of how he killed a boy in the past, and as a result, he was ostracised by all of the children. All except for a small, scrappy girl named Camelia. Camelia was very popular amongst her peers and had no reason even to acknowledge him by all accounts. Yet she found interest in him, likely because he was a dhampir. Camelia found this to be alluring and make him her friend. .

The two grew close, inseparable in fact. Over the years, they stuck close together, Camelia using Marino’s company as a refuge from her tumultuous home life and Marino enjoying the luxury of one good friend. Rumors died down significantly by the time Marino was 15..

As an Adolecent Marino is a kind and dutiful boy with a strong sense of justice and a love for protecting those who are wronged or outcast. In Spite of his desire to stick up for the downtrodden, he is terribly insecure himself. Marino tries his best to navigate a world he feels isolated in. In order to achieve this, Marino is completely willing to hide his appearance and his true nature if it means fitting in. His vampiric side is a feature of himself he doesn’t understand well and fears deeply, causing him to deny it despite it becoming increasingly difficult to do so.

As an Adult

A well spoken and jovial man, Marino one of the most well liked hunters in his city. He maintains the same sense of justice he did as a child, but more intense. He loves protecting others and wants to be the best influence he can on both humans and vampires. As an adult, he is significantly less insecure, in fact reveling in his otherness. Despite a light hearted demeanor, he takes his job extremely seriously. He’s witnessed a great amount of injustice against vampires and wants nothing more than to correct it. As such he strives to be a model hunter. Unfortunately, his desire to always be a paragon for hunters leaves him emotionally exhausted and over critical of himself. He is aware on some level of his constant self flagellation, but he also can’t bring himself to accept that he is enough and his small shortcomings don’t mean as much as he feels they do.
