More proficient at healing than fighting.
Spent his early years on the road, his parents having left the poles to see the world. They died when he was 8, he was then raised by an Earth Kingdom farming family until he was 14. At this point, he was so desperate to know where he came from, he left. Not knowing which tribe his parents came from (as they rarely spoke of their home, he can't remember and is unsure if they ever even told him), he decided to start with the Southern, as it was closer.
He met Ry on the way down, and they became fast best friends. Ry ended up going all the way to the South Pole with Karuk. No one in the Southern Water Tribe recognised his half remembered descriptions of his parents, but he decided to stay for a while anyway. He and Ry stay there together for about a year before Karuk decided to finally leave and attempt to make the journey north. During that time, the two grew even closer, and at some point Karuk realised he had feelings for his friend. Which he immediately suppressed. For a while.
