Sootflare was once an admirable warrior.

Despite a rough childhood, and perhaps because of it, Sootflare's warriorhood was marked by an unending loyalty to his clan, dedicated and thorough completion of his duties, and a desire to serve.

There traits are what earned him the rank of deputy under Lionstar. A streak of failures behind him, the golden tom needed someone reliable to fill the role. Sootflare hit the ground running. Dutifully enacting the leader's orders, managing events and patrols, and disciplining those who failed to meet the mark. It seemed Lionstar's luck had finally turned around.

When it came time for the deputy to step up once more and inherit the role of leader, nothing hinted at the disaster that would follow. Sootflare accepted his nine lives and the title of Sootstar graciously. The first few moons went smoothly. However, as time went on, he began to realize the true burdens a leader had to bear. In the hopes of easing the pressure, Sootflare appointed a deputy of his own. A warrior who appeared reliable and trustworthy. Just as soon as she was appointed, she disappeared.

Faced, now, with the thought of having to repeat the process of picking a second-in-command and his stressors mounting with nobody to help shoulder the burden, Sootflare retreated inward. Instead of reaching out for help, he grew derelict in his duties.

Slipping out of camp in the dead of night, Sootflare abandoned his post.
