Appearance

There's no two ways about it: Luco does not look his age. Most people will mistake him for a student, and since he tends to wear casual clothes around the school, he's been asked why aren't you in uniform?  more times then he can count. Despite being thirty years old, Luco appears fifteen or sixteen at the most, aging at half the usual human rate. He has all the maturity of an adult, but physically he's well behind.

Once people get past how young he looks, they'll find he's an extremely friendly and approachable person. He's always smiling, even when upset, and goes out of his way to minimize anything that might upset someone. He wears a crucifix at all times, but keeps it tucked in his shirt to avoid offending anyone, and he tends to decorate his horns with flowers and other plant life as well. This has the side effect of misleading people into thinking that he's some kind of a faun rather then a demon, a fact that he feels guilty over, even if he's making no move to change it. The fact that his brown hair is constantly sticking out at weird angles at the sides only adds to the illusion, because it's frequently mistaken for ears right up until he presses it down to his head. His eyes are a light green.

Luco stands at 5'7", which is about average for his 'age', and is fairly skinny in build. He doesn't have much (or any, if he's being honest with himself) muscle. His clothes tend to lean heavily on the casual side, and he favors greens and browns. All the shirts he wears are wide-necked, because anything with too small a neckline won't fit over his horns.

Personality

Luco is nice, no matter how you put it. He's so nice it's almost excessive, and he has a tendency to come on a bit too strong. He still isn't entirely used to being around the common man, and his enthusiasm can come off as pushy. He tends to sulk any time anyone turns him down, although he springs back quickly after. He wants to help everyone, all the time, even if it's something small and menial. He's going to hold all the doors, help carry all the books, and give all the best advice (in his opinion, anyway).

Luco was raised firmly Catholic (by a priest, no less) and his views and opinions tend to lean that way. Even so, he still comes up firmly on the forgiveness side of things, rather then the hellfire-and-damnation side of things. As a demon himself, he firmly believes that everyone--human and demon--is capable of salvation. He doesn't shy away from other demons, although he is aware that he's probably not the most popular figure. He wants whats best for everyone, and he's still struggling with the fact that what he thinks is 'best' isn't necessarily what others might want.

He's a pacifist to the end, and a firm believer in non-violence. Luco's never been in a fight in his life, and he has no plans to be in one in the future. If someone tried to fight him, he'd simply refuse to fight back, either running for help or enduring as necessary. He doesn't have much pain tolerance, but he refuses to lift a hand against his fellow man. Similarly, he's a vegetarian for ethical reasons, another fact that makes people convinced he's some sort of sheep spirit.

Academically, Luco is a bit behind. He could recite the bible from heart or debate theology to you, but if you asked him to do calculus he'd be unable. His schooling was spotty and poor at best, and he really should have been taking some extra classes, only he's never actually considered it to be a major failing of his, so he didn't bother. No one on the island realizes how bad his schooling was, so he's been allowed to skate by without being called to task.

Species Abilities

Luco is not a true demon anymore. Instead, he could not be considered a rising demon, which is the opposite of a falling angel. He's not quite risen yet--he's working on it--but his path to redemption has shaved away most of his demonic traits and abilities and left something else entirely in their place.

Luco has none of the normal demonic weaknesses. He can enter holy places without issue, wears a silver cross around his neck, and an excorcism will do a whole lot of nothing to him. Similarly, spells and abilities which primarily effect demons have a number of strange and confusing side effects. A sword which passes harmlessly through humans and only harms demons will pass through him as it would a demon. A sword which harms humans, and which has added damaged against demons will effect him more then it would a human, but not as much as a demon (about half). However, this also works in reverse. Abilities that only target angels won't work on him, but abilities that would harm a human and also affect angels more would have some of those bonus effects applied.

Sense Demon: Luco is capable of sensing other demons, although the range varies depending on the strength of the demon. For half-demons who have low levels of demonic power, it's only within a few feet. For a true demon of considerable strength, he can sense them around fifty feet away. This lets him tell that someone is a demon, but nothing beyond their general level of power (which can be inferred based on when he first feels them).

Suffer No Evil: Luco's relationship with demons who wish him ill is complicated at best, and downright confusing at worst. The long and short of it is that demons cannot harm Luco, whether directly or indirectly. The exact way this manifests tends to vary depending on the nature of the harm. A spell shot at him by a demon will blink from existence. A demon trying to throttle him will suddenly find them compelled to stop. A demon plotting to spread a nasty rumor they know will harm him might find their plans foiled repeatedly.

Luco is immune to not just malicious effects, but from all effects from demons. This includes auras and other passive effects, mind control, mind reading, the whole set. This counts both negative, neutral, and even positive effects--demonic healing wouldn't work on him.

This extends past simple demons though. Humans who have made a deal with a devil will also find their actions effected when it comes to Luco, as would any humans who have been asked by a demon to do so. Humans operating of their own free will without demonic involvement are perfectly capable of harming him, however, as are other supernatural creatures. This extends past christian-style demons--if it could be considered a 'devil' or a 'demon', it would probably be affected by the power. A demon could, in theory, accidentally hurt Luco, but it would have to be a true accident--setting up the conditions for an accident and then hoping one happened wouldn't work.

Biography

Luco was a foundling in a small village in the countryside. While he was pale, he was not unusually so, and was quickly taken in and handed over to an orphanage run by the local church. An unhappy baby, he screamed and cried almost constantly, becoming a constant annoyance and disruption to the orphanage where he lived.

When the wailing became too to deal with and he was finally weaned, Luco was handed over to the local priest who was in the hopes that he'd grow up to be a responsible member of society. The priest was already quite old, and despite concerns that he wouldn't be able to take care of the child, he managed just fine.

Better then fine for Luco, because when it slowly became obvious that Luco was not growing as he should, the priest accepted it. Even at the age of two when he had the size and behavior of a one year old, the priest accepted him anyway, even if the wailing didn't stop.

Eventually, the priest did manage to calm him down, although Luco still pulled away from any and all crosses. He screamed if he was taken into the church proper, and his growth continued along it's slow and steady path. Several mothers from the village hummed and hawed over him, eventually declaring that the child was in Gods hands, because they'd never seen anything like it.

Luco aged only a year for every two that he lived, and as the effects became more and more noticeable, the priest did his best to shield Luco from the villagers prying eyes. It was impossible to truly hide him due to how small the village was, and Luco became an open secret. Everyone knew about the strange boy who didn't grow up the way he should have, but for the most part Luco was normal enough, save his aversion to the church, which was almost impossible to avoid.

Luco was twenty--but looked no more then ten--when things took a turn for the worse. Small horns began to sprout from his scalp, and despite initial medical concerns, it became obvious within a few days that they truly were horns. The priest was left with a difficult decision to make--Luco was like a son to him, but even so it was impossible to pretend that he was human anymore.

Luco was devastated, crying through the night, and it was then that the old priest made his decision. He sat down with Luco and told him that he had done nothing wrong. He hadn't chosen to be born what he was, nor had he sinned, and that he couldn't believe in a god who would damn someone simply for existing. Luco could choose to do good, and the fact that he wasn't human would not damn him.

Luco threw himself into his religious studies. It was the relief he sought, and he returned to the village as normal, pulling a hat over his head to hide the horns while they were still small. The villagers gossiped--it was almost impossible to hide from them--but several pointed sermons about God's choice to love all of his creations was enough to stem the tide.

When Luco was twenty six, a priest from another village came for a visit, and the secret became impossible to keep. The two old men talked long into the night as Luco did his best to try not and eavesdrop, but he overheard much of it anyway.

The following weak, Luco and his father left the village for the first time, travelling into the city. Luco kept his hat firmly on, invisible for the first time in his life. No one knew his secret in the city, and he found it refreshing and intimidating. There were so many people, and it was a relief when he was shuffled into a church--larger then any he'd seen in his life--and back to a sense of familiarity. The church itself no longer bothered him, nor did the crosses or other holy symbols, and when he was presented to the bishop and handed a cross, his horns shown for the first time he reached the city, Luco found himself abruptly shoved into an intense and secretive theological debate.

Luco was a demon, they decided, but he wasn't burned by holy symbols. A vague attempt to exorcise him proved fruitless, and after several more tests--all of which Luco passed with flying colors--the archbishop was called in, travelling in secret to see for himself.

The question about whether or not a demon could be a believer was not one that they had encountered before, and since Luco had not yet had his confirmation, that became the sticking point of the debate. It took weeks--weeks where Luco was all but confined to the church for fear of someone discovering him.

Eventually the decision was made that he would be allowed. It was obvious that at least a few of the gathered priests expected him to burst into flames at any moment, but Luco was confirmed without issue.

He returned with the small village with his father, and settled in to a normal enough life. It was obvious that the trip had taken a lot out of him, and his health continued to decline until he finally passed away more then a year later.

He was approached almost immediately by the bishop, who had traveled all the way to the small village just to speak to him. He explained to him about the island of Manta Carlos, and about the potential he had as an envoy. He was someone who had grown up in the church, and who might be able to represent it. It would be a big deal to have someone reaching out who was like them, and while Luco wasn't exactly excited by the sentiment, he agreed to go anyway.

His first year on Manta Carlos was spent getting him up to speed, and it was only then that he took a position at the interfaith chapel, educating himself about all religions. The chapel was small and understaffed, and it was surprisingly easy to be put in charge of it, even though he was new to the island.

Extra Info

Luco's first language is Spanish, although he also speaks Latin and English.

Luco's family name means 'Church'. Since his parentage was unclear, he was given the name Iglesias to indicate he was raised by the church.
