Cahethal was born during the Helkaer occupation of Tremala Woods. His mother was away often during the first month of his life and he was watched by Atreyu, Aaradhya, and his nursing mare, Lana. At four months old, he's taking a walk with his mother when the two of them run into his older half-sister, Death Chant, returning home. Unfortunately, his older sister does not stay for long. He spends most of his time with Lana and observing his birth mother from a distance. Occasionally, Respira takes walks with him and plays with him, but she is often busy and does not have a lot of time. As a result, he bonds tightly with Lana and considers her his mother rather than Respira. He also spends a lot of time with Aaradhya, who serves as his babysitter when Lana can't be there for him. He grows up among foals his age, namely Persephone, Void, and Wolf. He enjoys playing with all of them, though Void and Wolf stray away from their group as they get older and Persephone is taken under Yvette's wing for a time. He watches his mother train another colt named Undead Legion, though at this point in his life, it's easier for him to remain where he is, in comfort, rather than try anything more ambitious.

The months go by and Cahethal remains, almost bored as everyone around him has other things to do. The one person he remains close to is Persephone, though he wonders whether or not she truly cares for him or just wants to manipulate him. However, one day changes his life - and the lives of the entire herd - forever. While sleeping in one of the caves of Toxin Raj, a fire erupts, started by a lightning strike during a terrible storm. He is woken by none other than Undead Legion, now a full Helkaer member, who helps escort him, Persephone, and Atarah to safety. They all manage to escape to the Caerali Desert, where Cahethal discovers his birth mother's horrific injuries and Lana's horrific end. He is devastated by her loss. As the night wears on, his father, Atreyu, also fails to make an appearance. Aaradhya and Evereve notify him that they're going to search for Atreyu, though he decides not to join them, afraid of what he might find. After his birth mother steps down from her position as Commander, Cahethal realizes that he has a choice to make. Does he go with his birth mother? Does he stay in the Outlands? Or does he venture somewhere else, somewhere new? As a surprise even to himself, he chooses to stay in the Outlands and moves to Clypeus, the land of Undead Legion.

To his delight and continued confusion, Persephone joins him in Clypeus. Atarah also joins their little band. Only a few days into living in Clypeus, Cahethal meets with Undead Legion and tells him about his ambitions to be something more and Legion assigns him to a long-term spying mission on the Dark Kingdom. Cahethal accepts, glad that he finally has something to do. Only a few days later, Legion holds a herd meeting where he notifies Atarah and Persephone of their own assignments. Evereve and Aaradhya return during the herd meeting and receive their own assignments. For the most time ever, Cahethal feels pride and drive in his work, setting out to the Free lands to practice his spying techniques. He does not get long to get practice in, as its announced that Sephora and Khalon, the Dark Royals, have vanished. The new Dark Royals, Joker and Thomasin, are going to be holding a coronation to celebration their ascension. Though Cahethal wishes he would have gotten more practice in, he attends the coronation, posing as a concerned citizen of the Dark Kingdom named Kazar, trying to get any information he can on the disappearance of the previous Royals and any insight into the future plans of the new Dark Royals. During the coronation, a delusional mare named Aphelion challenges the crown. She is chased out by several individuals of the herd and the coronation continues.

Cahethal continues his spying mission in the Dark Kingdom, traveling to the lands of Ittudale to try and learn what information he can. While he's in Clypeus, he is summoned by Atarah, who has given birth to a nephilim child named Antares, successfully completing her mission.
