Marcelle Thornegate is a well known name, especially among the residents of the Thornegate settlement on Mammon. He is a hardworking cowboy, having inherited the family ranch and settlement surrounding it--A settlement that resides dangerously close to the massive Chasm cut into the earth by the centuries old Cataclysm event that nearly destroyed everything.
Despite the hazards of the area, he and his townsfolk endure and come out stronger for it, even if he and his companions have lost people along the way...

Marcelle is generally cordial with strangers, lest they are trying to stir up trouble or cause a scene. Given his amount of duties on the settlement and upkeep of his family’s ranch, he is usually found in pretty exhausted and irritable state. Despite this, he still does what is needed of him.
He usually plays as a mediator, trying to bring everyone to some form of agreement or resolution to avoid big conflict. This can be both good and problematic at times, depending on the situation. At the very least, he is trying his best.
Marc does take great pride in his work, despite having to bear the heavy weight of being the last successor to the land his family entrusted to him. He wasn’t planning on it early on, but once it landed in his lap he took it with stride. He also cares a lot about people’s safety, and delegates as best he can to keep people away from danger.

Summary
The Thornegate family was one of the first families to settle on Mammon back in its heyday. Their claimed plot of land held very valuable materials that quickly drew others to the area, and then the Cataclysm hit. Surprisingly, the Thornegate ranch and surrounding settlement went untouched, despite residing dangerously close to the hazardous chasm the Cataclysm left behind.
While others fled, the Thornegates refused, and instead continued to pursue their way of life on the farm. Through the next two centuries, the ranch and land was passed down from kin to kin as they learned to adapt to the unusual new conditions. It was dangerous, yes, but to them it became a way of life. Should a traveller mention the Thornegates, they would know of the hardy bastards.
As time went on, Marcelle was born into the Thornegate family and was raised along with two other siblings. As a boy he acted like a hotshot, constantly dipping out on chores and getting into trouble.
But one instance of playing hooky changed things forever.
Both of his brothers fell victim to a terrible accident in the hazards of the Chasm, and suddenly he was an only child. Though his bailing out saved his life in the end, the tone within the family shifted forever, and himself.
Marcelle was now the heir to his family’s centuries-old estate, including the surrounding settlement of folks he’d grown up with. It was a hard adjustment taking on twice the duties around the farm, but he took it in stride to make up for his childhood guilt. His parents eventually passed to old age, and he was alone.
One family who had settled in Thornegate had also suffered the dangers from the Chasm, in the end orphaning the child they left behind. Marcelle decided to take the child, Daliat, in to raise on the estate with himself and they quickly bonded as she began to grow up and he continued his work on the settlement.
