- Akuma was originally made as a Dangan Ronpa OC all the way back in 2014! He was Super High School Level Ringleader.
- His character started out as bitchy and mean, and since then, has obviously done a complete 180. I like my boy gentle and nice!
- He was exposed to the circus at a young age. Akuma has always had a connection to lions ever since he first saw one.
- His native language is German, but he is also fluent in English as well. Akuma also knows French, but it's pretty intermediate.
Akuma was born to Verena Kraus, a single 19 year old mother. His father was apart of a street gang, and as soon as he found out that Verena was pregnant, he immediately disappeared, leaving her by herself. Verena lived on the streets for a few months until she eventually came to her sister, Claudia, and lived with her and her husband Jakob until a year or so after Akuma was born. It was planned from the start that Claudia and Jakob would adopt him, as Verena had severe tuberculosis. Verena died shortly after Akuma turned one.
Jakob introduced Akuma to the family circus business very early in his childhood. In tradition, the oldest son of the current ringleader (or immediate family if he didn't have children) would take on the role as ringleader when the current either retired or died. He gained an immediate connection to the circus and even helped Jakob with a few performances as a "Junior Ringleader." All of the performers at the circus fell in love with little Akuma. I mean...honestly, who wouldn't.
TW FOR DEATH
While Akuma was socializing with the lions, it came to Rudolf's turn. He never really interacted with him due to his snappy nature, but he wasn't going to let that stop him. Shortly after opening the cage and slowly reaching a hand out to Rudolf to sniff, the lion, after years of abuse, lashed out at Akuma, slamming him onto the ground. Jakob heard the terrified screams of his son and quickly came to the rescue. Unsheathing his sword hidden within his performance scepter, Jakob was going to save Akuma at any cost. While Akuma was knocked out at that point, he doesn't remember much aside from waking up to his father's mauled and mangled body being dragged across the floor by the old lion. He can't remember much after this.
Shortly after Jakob's death, the circus permanently shut down. Without a ringleader nor a fitting replacement, there was nothing else to really do. Akuma took a very long time to at least tolerate the trauma he faced that day, but he was still determined to restore his father's legacy within the circus. At the age of 14 he had a whole notebook full of research, potential acts, even contacts for performers. Claudia respected Akuma's dream and supported his decision throughout the whole process. With help from a financial advisor named Edmund, Akuma's dreams were turning into a reality.
Now the scene is set for Behind the Curtain to take place. As a very very young ringleader, many performers were worried about Akuma, especially after witnessing the death of his father. He didn't let this stop him, no matter how horrified and anxious he was about it. He was going to keep Jakob's legacy within the Misemono Circus. Old members of the circus family, the Strongwoman Nadja and the Firebreather Zion helped Akuma with every step of the way. Although things are running as planned, there's something about Edmund that Akuma doesn't trust...
Adoptive Father
Jakob was Akuma's number one supporter from the very beginning. As soon as he set eyes on him, he knew there was something special about Akuma. He very closely raised Akuma with the circus to understand the family business. The two were very close, much like a father-son bond should be.
Akuma picked up on a lot of Jakobs traits as well: he was understanding, respectful, and very cautious of anything he did or say. Even though the two aren't blood related, they still have a relationship that one could only wish for. Akuma misses his father very much.
Adoptive Mother / Biological Aunt
Claudia was proud to be able to raise her sister's child as her own. She had suffered miscarriages in the past, and it was a gift that she was able to have Akuma. Of course, Claudia is very protective of Akuma, but still treats him with respect and gives him plenty of responsibilities on the ranch where they live. After Jakob's death, the two's relationship was damaged severly due to their grieving processes. The two understand one another now, of course, but with Akuma being so deeply traumatized from the event it was hard for him to understand anything else.
Akuma shares a lot of traits with Claudia, not just because they're biologically related. There's an obvious resemblance with their facial shapes, violet eyes, and freckles that cover a good majority of their bodies. He gained a lot of Claudia's traits such as being protective, extremely caring, but still strong enough to stand up for what's right. Akuma is very grateful to have his mother and loves her very much!
Godmother
Nadja and Claudia are lifelong friends ever since they were children. She was actually the one who introduced her to Jakob in the first place when Nadja was just starting out at the circus. Obviously, it's safe to assume that Nadja has been there with Akuma from the very start. She was one of the first people to see him as soon as Verena, Claudia, and Jakob returned from the hospital. Nadja is Akuma's godmother in this aspect; she knows everything about Claudia, and by extension, knows everything about Akuma as well.
During the circus revival Nadja acted as Akuma's mentor and spokesperson for most of the legal stuff regarding the circus. She has been with the circus for about 15 years, so she was very experienced and understood how things were ran as Jakob did in the past. Nadja acts as a secondary mother figure to Akuma- actually it's more of a cool aunt vibe, but it still counts. If anyone even tries to put a hand on Akuma, she will snap their arm in half. She absolutely could.
Friend / Circus Member
Zion is essentially Akuma's cool big brother. Not literally, but since Zion was very new at the circus when he first joined, he was around Akuma a lot. The two got into mischief all the time along with Pippin, even though he was scolded a lot by Jakob for it. Nevertheless the two have a very sibling like bond as Akuma has known Zion for, literally, his entire life.
In the circus revival, Zion acts as another one of Akuma's mentors. He doesn't have the knowledge that Nadja has, but he's been around the circus block a couple of time. Zion is almost the complete opposite of Akuma; he's loud, obnoxious, and is a huge show off. Despite this, the two get along perfectly.
Friend / Circus Member
Being a couple of years older than Akuma, the two got along from the very beginning. Pippin's father also worked at the circus, of course, as a clown. She would commonly hang out at the circus because of this, and of course, immediately drew herself close to Akuma. Again, the two are complete opposites. Pippin's extremely excitable and hyper personality freaked Akuma out at first, but he slowly got used to it. Along with Zion, the trio caused a lot of commotion on the circus grounds during practices. Pippin and Akuma somehow broke the cotton candy machine and got sick from eating so much of it. Akuma still can't even look at cotton candy because of this, but Pippin is basically a walking sugar cube, so it doesn't effect her.
A couple of years after Jakob's death and the eventual end of the circus, her father also passed due to a severe heart attack. Because she was so close to her father, Akuma and Pippin comforted each other a lot during this time. Pippin always wanted to be a clown just like her father; they were going to have an act together once she got older! As soon as Akuma brought up that he was potentially going to be bringing the circus back, Pippin was extremely excited and was essentially glued to the project as much as Akuma was...but she left the work to him, naturally.
Friend / Circus Member
Charlotte was one of the first people Akuma reached out to outside of the existing circus members. She was well known for being a sword swallower and assistant in a magic show that her and her ex-fiance used to perform. Living in France, she was a little hesitant to take up on Akuma's offer. However, she agreed, wanting to start a new life seprate from the one she was known due to her ex-fiance.
She is a very calm and soft spoken woman and can immediately be seen as the token "mom friend" of the whole group of circus performers. Akuma and her often help each other with their acts, especially when it comes to script memorization for Akuma. The two are pretty close as Charlotte respects Akuma and knows he's just a young kid looking for support. She's one of his biggest supporters!
