About
Revel has always been earnest, taking any job given to him with full effort and keeping his head down where needed. Unfortunately this made him a wonderful pawn for the Fourth Guild; nowadays he's technically still on the same track, but has transformed into someone far more mistrustful than those early days of naiveté, always suspecting capture or betrayal, seeing plots and traps where there are none. He's quick to bolt or slip away, finding it hard to bring himself to trust even the most basic gestures, always calculating how he'll escape. Some part of him is desperate to escape this tormented way of viewing the world, but it's so far buried that he wouldn't even know where to start.

When not on high alert, he enjoys the company of animals, and will usually refrain from killing a creature that he doesn't intend to eat, even if it poses a threat to him. He recently came into company of a beastling, which he feels a resonance with as a fellow misfit. He'll eat anything he can get his paws on, even if he doesn't necessarily like it, and is always pocketing new snacks. His biggest pet peeve is others getting his name wrong; how convenient now that he lives in silence now, a nameless stranger to everyone unlucky enough to meet him.

History
Revel started life as a Guild-sponsored orphan; technically his parents were still around, but he'd been anonymously surrendered, and as far as he was concerned it was the orphanage that was his home all along. However, the competitive culture of Dula Dula seeped into everything, even and especially the hearts of kits, and Revel's trusting nature and blind sincerity made him the perfect target for his particularly rough roommates. By the time he was old enough to join the pool of recruits he was feeling awfully excluded, an outsider where he'd lived his entire life; so when he overheard one of the instructors whispering to another about a Fourth Guild job that was recruiting, he waltzed right up to the contact mentioned and just .... asked for work.

Needless to say, the contact had a good laugh at this unabashed little recruit. But Revel must have made an impression somehow, because soon he was pocketing his first payout. It was morally questionable work at best, but something about it was so freeing--no more Guild-sanctioned trips and caretaker's rules, and most importantly no more having to bow under the mocking of his fellow orphans, who he'd have been teaming up with at that moment had he chosen the standard Hunter's Guild route. Here, he was liked by his fellow grunts, if still suffering the occasional ribbing, all because he could do the job ....

His first promotion would come with being shipped off to the mainland. Scouting the forests around Wellstone was a different sort of work, but he was a natural with his Hunter's Guild training. Dodging authorities became a breeze; slipping into outposts undetected was but a lark. The praise from his higher-ups was a lonely little child's dream finally come true. And so when he was offered a very special assignment, he jumped at the chance to prove himself.

The task was simple: protect a hard drive. Unfortunately it involved traipsing out to the middle of nowhere among the mountains and northern forests of Scatterstar, as some conflict in the inner workings of the Fourth Guild he didn't understand apparently posed a threat, and only the most robust means of hiding whatever data lay on the drive would protect it. With hardly an instruction more than 'wait for us' he was dumped unceremoniously into the wilderness, left to his own devices, keenly aware of the unusual little box in the bottom of his lightweight pack.

That was nearly six years ago. Revel became many things in that time: hypervigilant, quick to flee, startlingly opportunistic, a thorn in the side of the hostile local settlement, and worst of all, more powerfully lonely than he'd ever been in his life. Constantly on the move, Revel would vanish into the brush if any curio came close, and fight as if for his very life when cornered. Running into him became a genuine problem for those traveling through the region. Supplies and materials were lifted from sleeping camps. Sun-Sink Valley's commune sent hunting parties to flush him out, always unsuccessful. Some would describe him as a haggard ghost; others, a monster whose reign of terror needed to end. But no one knew why he was out there, least of all Revel himself.

Ultimately, that would change when a Fourth Guild scout came calling. They relayed the password Revel had been chanting to himself like a mantra in his head, a lifeline that sparked hope in him for the first time in years. But when asked why he had been left to roam for so long, the scout's answer turned Revel's joy to stone.

They all got busted. Your branch burned. Guess they never figured out where to send someone to retrieve you until now. So if you'll hand over the hard drive ....

Revel might have liked to paint what came next as something he simply did without thinking, but that would be a lie. He very much intended to kill the scout once he'd heard that. Here he was, having been used in the ultimate way, now holding a hard drive he still didn't know the gravity or contents of. But with no one alive to report back to the Guild on him, he vanished back into the woods .... and started the long walk towards civilization.

His fears of being caught by the Fourth Guild are completely warranted. The hard drive he carries in secret is still sealed; he can't bring himself to open it. But sometimes, when the constant fear is quiet, when he can almost catch a glimpse of a normal future, he considers tossing it into the nearest body of water where it belongs ....

Design + Notes
  • only wears clothes in winter, and even then it's minimal. thankfully he grows out quite the fluffy winter coat.
  • bead glows. it often gets wrapped to preserve his camouflage.
  • usually fairly grimy....
  • pupils are slits.
  • rarely speaks a word at all, even if you talk to him. he's listening, and will gesture or nod, but only speaks when he has something to say, which is pretty much never.
  • will eat just about anything but prefers the good stuff if he can get it. no he does not have table manners any more. sorry not sorry.
  • will blatantly lie (usually by shrug or ommission) with absolutely no shame, even when it's obvious.

  frieeeeend? Juniper
He's more like her pet project than her friend, but hey, he's only mostly the worst pick. At least she'll never get mugged with him around to strangle the would-be thief.

  mortal enemy Aizel
Ugh, so what if Revel killed some of your stupid family or whatever? One of these days these two are going to kill each other. Not a question of if, just when.

  acquaintance Love
Love is about the only person in the world who could see Revel for who he really is and describe him as "a pretty alright guy". Time spent together has been bizarre but.... productive.
