Alinar upon seeing he had not dreamt up the Anchor.
Origin
Alinar was born in raised in Clan Lavellan. He wasn't particularly different, but was respected enough for his stealth skills. He wasn't ever committed to life in the clan but also never had that much of a desire to leave or pursue much else. He never really found himself with any paths that interested him. It wasn't until fate threw him into the middle of the story that he found his love for adventuring and fully realized his leadership skills.
Inquisition Formed
Alinar was sent to the conclave as a spy along with a couple other top rogues in the clan. He was the sole survivor that night and can to this day hardly remember the event. When he woke up, he was eager to help Cassandra despite her initial roughness. Later as the inquisition was formed he accepted with no hesitation, he found nothing really tying him down to the clan, and was loving the thrill of adventure with these new people. He didn't particularly love the title "Herald of Andraste" as he never had much belief in higher beings, even the elven gods, but it was something he learned to accept. The travelling he did for the inquisition was riveting and the companions he was recruiting along the way were remarkable, particularly Dorian.
Title Given
Despite having done the job mostly up until here, being named inquisitor still came as a surprise and he took the job proudly. Leading the inquisition was mostly natural for him, but he found much comfort in the help of his advisors. Moments where he felt they couldn't defeat Corypheus were few and short. At some points it could've been seen as arrogance but he truly believed in his inquisition.
Trespasser + After
[MAJOR TRESPASSER SPOILERS, BEWARE]
By the time of Trespasser, Alinar and Dorian had married and he had lead the Inquisition somewhat peacefully. He had expected The Exalted Council to be somewhat tense for the inquisition, but he certainly hadn't expected the battling, investigating, and revelations that came. He personally felt a little glad to be adventuring rather than sitting and discussing politics. The Qunari attack was unforseen, but coming across and learning the truth about Solas left Alinar in complete shock.
After the adventuring was mostly ended he had to finally go back to the council to discuss the fate of his Inquisition. He ended up disbanding it, deciding it wasn't truly needed anymore and he could help people elsewhere in smaller ways.
Alinar decided on not settling in Tevinter with Dorian, but they still visit, communicate, and stay completely loyal to one another, knowing one day they settle down together, just not yet. Alinar continued adventuring, sometimes solo, sometimes with friends new or old, sometimes with the Red Jenny, or even sometimes back with Clan Lavellan.
