Design

Kieron wears a brown scarf, a gift from his sister back when he still lived on the outpost far north. Underneath, he has a red sleeveless vest with black trimming and brown knee-length trousers. A halite pendant used to hang around his neck but is now on his left hip. There are gold bands on his biceps, and on his hands brown fingerless gloves. He doesn't like to wear shoes and other footwear, so he wraps bandages on his feet and lower calves as a compromise instead.

His hair is a very pale blond with red tips, choppy and spiky, with the longest strands where his ears should be—they aren't visible. Unlike his hair though, his eyebrows are red. His eyes are red as well, and his pupils, like his ears, aren't visible. His skin is dark gray to black, with red markings on his face, shoulders, wrists, and calves. There's a small jagged scar on his right shoulder hidden by his scarf, from when Avi first tackled him for a hug.

"There's no need to repeat yourself. I ignored you just fine the first time."

02 — Personality

Disaster Bi . Lawful Tired

Grumpy is the first thing that comes to mind upon first looking at him. Justifiably so, as Kieron often goes on with his everyday life wearing a perpetual scowl or a sharp look in his eyes that says he will bite off one's head if they so much as look at him wrong. Kieron will not survive without uttering something spicy every ten minutes, though he's mellowed out in the past couple years. He also likes to give backhanded compliments. Or just giving compliments to a person—mostly to his sister and her best friend—while insulting others. Despite being seen as snarky and intimidating by some, Kieron is actually a big softie to those he's taken under his wing. In fact, this is a well-guarded secret but he loves reading romance novels—to which finding out is punishable by a slow and agonizing death.

Kieron is a Sentinel, a warrior of his race, and his main expertise is jungle warfare, which is kind of ironic since he seems to like getting lost/wandering around in the forest around their tribe, but then he says he can do that because he's at ease, and can quickly navigate his way back if he actually wants to.

"You're a little too small to be intimidating."

03 — Background

Quick Info

Because of the nonhuman half of his nature, Kieron was destined to be a Sentinel from birth. He's a predatory Theiltes, someone born with the ability to protect his people, but with it comes a darkness, vicious and primal and bloodthirsty. Because of this predator inside him and some other members of his race, the non-predatory ones can't help but feel wary of them, waiting for them to succumb to their beastly instincts and turn against them as prey. Young Sentinels-in-training are sent to the northern outpost to learn how to control their instincts without fear of hurting their more vulnerable brethren.

Predatory Theiltes are prevalent in Kieron's paternal bloodline, with his father, his older sister, his grandfather, his uncle, and his cousin all having predatory beasts inside them. As such, it was also already kind of expected that he would be one as well when he was born. The outpost had been ready for him at such a young age. Earlier than his peers, he was already stationed there at the age of three.

For the first few decades his life, Kieron had no other priority aside from being a full-fledged Sentinel. The next few years after that, he was slowly given down time to learn to loosen up to better acclimatize when he went back home to Cyllevia. Even so, when he came back, he still knew very little outside of being a warrior for his people. And what he knew he only learned from books and letters he got from his sister Avi.

In a sense, Kieron is only starting to live his life and learning outside the boundaries he needed as a young Theiltes struggling for control.

Theiltan Abilities

Kieron's nonhuman half is the atypical red widow spider. Though he very rarely does, he can transform into a huge spider and can produce silk, although thankfully not in the same way as his more natural companions. Due to this other half, his skin is too sensitive to touch and movement, acting as an extra sense something between taste and touch, to the point where he can feel minute vibrations in the air. Unprovoked hugs disorient him and can even be nauseating because it's too much stimuli.

He seems to be able to communicate with members of his more natural counterpart, an ability unique to only a handful Theiltes.

Man-eater Myth

When he was young, he spun a web around a playmate from toes up to shoulders and left him in the forest. Because of that, Rhenan once spread rumors about Kieron and how he had a taste for human meat. Sunny confronted him about it where he explicitly debunked it. Earlier than that, during Kieron and Avi's first meeting after a long time, she also asked him if he was going to devour her. Later that night, Rhenan's room became inaccessible due to an excessive amount of spiders and spiderwebs.

Age

Though Kieron looks like he's in the middle of his twenties, he's actually far older than that. Theiltes live around three times as long as an average human and age differently mentally, emotionally, and sometimes physically. Their physical growth slows down after the first decade. Kieron is actually around 87 already, though in Theiltes terms, that still makes him a young adult.

05 — Relationships

01.
Aimhirghin Songborn
adopted sister

Avi is his adopted little sister. He took care of her when they found her egg in the north. Before she hatched, Kieron would always sing lullabies for her when he thought no one was watching. In fact, her real name, Aimhirghin, means "born of song". She didn't grow up alongside him, but moved in with his mom back in their tribe when she was big enough to cross the winter plain between them together with some other adults. They didn't see each other again until Kieron returned when he was in his seventh decade, though they regularly sent letters to each other prior to that. Kieron is a bit of a protective older brother.

02.
Rhenan
cousin

Rhenan and Kieron grew up together. This cousin of his has the attributes of a red scorpion. When they were younger, Rhenan was very stiff and formal. A cynical and downbeat brat, in Kieron's words. He would usually beat himself up for being born the way he is, the predatory nature in him decided by birth. Kieron would usually reprimand him for it, often telling him that despite that darkness inside them, it also came with the ability to protect the rest of their people. Nowadays, they just act like brats with each other. No one quite understands how that happened.

03.
Aurelia
soulmate

A relationship doomed before it even began. Aurelia bears the same Soulmark as Kieron. Soulbonds are seen as sacred by most Theiltes, a thing to be celebrated—and yet Aurelia has turned him down.

Aurelia has already been in a relationship long before Kieron met her, even though she knows she's one of the few bestowed with the mark. Kieron doesn't harbor any bad feelings towards her though, and in some part of him he might even feel proud of her for taking rein of her life instead of letting destiny have its ways. However, it also doesn't mean that Kieron didn't go through a rough time accepting it when he first learned of it.
