The crest on his left shoulder is a rendition of the god Kabuto's symbol, and is generally considered to be the more "respectful" and less offensive version, commonly used by humans to avoid being smitten. It is also used to show his higher ranking among the rest of the sages. Likewise, the female leader has a crest reflecting Hokori.

The darker outfit (original design) is used as ceremonial garb, and is worn rarely.
