Shadowtail had it rough since the beginning, he was the only survivor out of his litter. As a kit, he and his sister, Echokit, contracted Greencough. Echokit died as a result, despite everything Featherflight did. As a result his father, Swiftclaw, began to resent Shadowkit. It was obvious that he absolutely adored Echokit and wasn't too happy that he happened to be the one who survived. As an apprentice Shadowpaw did everything he could to impress his father to only be met with indifference. When Swiftclaw and Dovewhisker have their second litter he is practically forgotten by them.

Shadowtail is very private and quiet, trying only to not be a burden and helping as much as he can. Of course every cat in the clan admires his hard work and loyalty- his closest friends, Thunderstripe and Cinderfall, wish he could see just how much he was wanted and liked by the clan instead of vying for his parent's attention.
