Cross is a mortal soul in Purgatory that looks like a split down the middle between a cross fox and a red fox. In reality they are two lovers that died together long ago, and originally walked into Purgatory together as two separate souls. One was destined for Hell and one for Heaven, but they refused to leave each other, so they both decided to stay in Purgatory forever, together, holding hands. They remained wandering Purgatory for so long that most would go mad, and any Divini would be killed by Purgatory's draining magical effects. Under the chaotic magic effects of Purgatory, they became stuck together at their clasped hands, then slowly fused more and more together until they began to resemble one being. When they speak, they speak with two different voices in unison, hinting at their separate pasts.

    Since their very souls are now fused, they are impossible to sort into Heaven or Hell, since half of their combined soul is bound to either place. They no longer remember their original names or their lives as individual mortals thousands of years ago, making sorting them even more difficult. The only thing they remember is their love for each other, which holds them together forevermore. To actually sort them into Heaven or Hell, they would need to be taken to the Thrones or Sophus in order to have the deepest secrets of their soul read properly, but this will likely never happen, as they will never allow themselves to be separated, and they fight back harshly against any demons or angels that try to persuade them into the afterlife. 

     At this point, they lead a small band of mortal souls who also wish to remain in Purgatory, protecting them from the heckling of Divini trying to drag them away to Heaven or Hell. After so long in Purgatory dealing with Divini, Cross is quite an expert at fighting them back, especially after having stolen BOTH an Angelic weapon and an Infernal weapon, each to keep the other side at bay. Since Cross is so prolific in Purgatory, they can sometimes appear in liminal spaces. Mortals that see them sometimes assume they are some kind of spirit or deity who protects the souls of the deceased (which is essentially true), so there are several myths and folklore variations written about them as well.
