"the road to hell is paved with good intentions"

Cud, an auroch from the empire of Nymene, and a creature of massive size and few words. They consider themself a witchfinder over a person, and diligently serve their faction, and now the Mage Order, by hunting down and outing wild mages. They come across and cold and distant, and very few have ever broken past the heavy walls they have put up. Cud is extremely distrustful of mages and considers all of them to be a threat. If you happen to catch their eye, it's best to keep your head down and quickly move along

Somewhere, deep down beneath the years of deeply ingrained fear of mages, perhaps there's still the young bull that once cared for them. But that's probably unlikely, isn't it?

History

Raised in the neighboring empire of Nymene, Cud was reared from a young age with a deep distrust of mages and all they represent. Both of their parents were high-ranking members of the military, and often led expeditions to round up and export mages found in Nymene to the kingdom of Ivras. As soon as Cud was old enough they began to train as a soldier, intent to join the Nymenian military as their parents had. They enlisted the moment they were of age, and served their empire diligently for over 15 years.

As they had risen in rank, they were assigned to a small force of soldiers who were tasked with finding and exporting mages hiding throughout Ivras. During their very first hunt, Cud managed to come across a small, rundown inn that had been hiding mages traveling through the countryside. Many of the mages were young and posed no real threat, they were simply afraid of being caught and taken away from their home. Bound to their duty, Cud still rounded them up and brought them to their task force’s encampment. However, Cud felt a strange twinge of empathy towards the desolate mages, and as such, did not follow proper protocol when securing them for the night. One mage, a young cervid with incredible power, managed to slip out, and set the camp into a giant blaze, killing many soldiers and mages in the chaos.

The remaining mages who had survived disappeared into the countryside once more, and many soldiers were left crippled or dead after the attack. Cud was held responsible for the attack, as they had neglected to follow protocol, which had led to the tragedy. As such, they were stripped of their rank and discharged from the military. Desolate at being expelled and bringing disgrace upon their name and their parents’, Cud left Nymene on a trading vessel headed to Ivras. Upon reaching the mage-infested country of Ivras, Cud quickly put their skills as a former military-grade mage hunter to use, and joined the league of witchfinders within Ivras.

Cud no longer carries any sliver of empathy towards mages and their plight, and have grown increasingly cold and detached over the years, their only true loyalty now lying with the witchfinders. Deep down, they hold the hope that perhaps their actions in Ivras will make up for their grave mistakes as a young bull, and that they might bring honor back to their family name.
