Adam Howell, brother to Noah Howell, grew up as the prodigal son. His parents quickly noticed his academic excellence and drive, and had high expectations of him as a result. Adam did his best to live up to these constantly evolving expectations, putting forth more than his all every time in order to chase the bar which only got higher with each success. For all the greatness his parents saw in him, they saw the opposite in their second son, Noah, who was born frail and sickly, and who was stigmatized as an undesirable child. Adam defended his brother, whether it was emotional or physical, and was his shield, his guardian and protector. The two were inseparable until one day Noah's behavior changed inexplicably, and he went from being a timid boy to a problem child running amok and wreaking havoc. Adam desperately hung onto his brother, refusing to give up hope until Noah severed ties with the most venomous act he could manage. Noah disappeared, leaving Adam with their overbearing parents and no escape. Adam enrolled in college to pursue an english degree and he moved out as soon as he could.
He didn't have the money for school though and to get the cash together he took odd jobs, at first little things, slowly shifting into more and more illegal tasks, until Adam was taking hits. He didn't like it, but the pay was good and the blackmail of his existing misdeeds kept him in line. He was stuck on a dark path he had no desire to walk, but there wasn't an easy out. He remained silent out of fear of losing everything, of disappointing his parents, of losing his college, of spending the rest of his life rotting in jail. Adam kept quiet. He kept taking hits until he took a perilous job and the market cut ties, letting him go now that his use was up- and he found himself with an english degree and bloody hands. Adam took up writing murder mystery novels which were quickly acknowledged for their realism and the palpable suspense one could feel reading the book, sometimes getting into the mind of the killer in ways before unimagined. Adam found himself successful beyond his expectations, showered in acclaim and praise, but because of his history he couldn't find satisfaction in it. He just felt shame in hiding, and disappointment in himself. The writing helped him cope, but also forced him to mediate on his crimes- something he found therapeutic in a way, a sort of penance, in a quiet way the books were confessions of guilt.
Adam, in present day, lives in a nice flat on his lonesome where he writes his novels. He spends his free time reading, going on walks and doing book signings. He's quite popular, so his life requires very little physical labor of him, despite this he still maintains a good work out routine. He's a lonely soul, charismatic in person but isolated behind his various masks, unable to truly express himself to anyone other than thinly veiled as characters in his books. He only maintains surface level relationships, the paranoia of someone finding out his secrets too intense to allow anything more than that. Despite this, he appears to everyone as the perfect person, while in truth the expectation of being perfect is what ultimately crushed him and caused his constant worry about being insufficient. He keeps this hidden well, only Noah knowing the truth. Adam has a tough exterior and can always force a smile, no matter how dismal the situation is.
To many he's the object of perfection and desire, but to himself he's a failure, an inverted image of everything he ever wanted to be. Adam's interests include literature, language and true crime. His favorite color is blue, and he's always preferred savory foods over sweet ones. His broad shoulders and imposing physique make him an imposing figure, even if he's gentle in public. He has a mixed morbid and dry sense of humor that either really resonates with people or misses the mark completely. He's also interested in bone collecting, cruelty free of course. Adam decorates his flat with dark colors, leather seating and a minimalist style.
Overall, Adam is a man of many secrets, a charismatic author with a troubled past, and an isolated man. He can't let anyone in, even though he wants to, because the risk is too extreme. Maybe one day he'll find someone who he can trust with his ultimate secret, but until then, he persists with his facade.
