old-school JRPG setting. A sort of fantasy pseudo-AI grown in a lab to be loyal to their dark master, but they were released and bonded with the hero instead, giving them a sense of constant altered reality where they're trapped between loyally executing their master's will and being very nice and doting to their eternal love [pre-programmed], the hero sworn to destroy him.

Their love isn't an intimate or pining one, so there has been very little conflict on that front.
