Backstory

There is much not none of how the fours stags appeared on Yggdrasil, one legend said they used to be the great Eikþyrnir.

Facts

  • Dàinn helps Dvalinn with his emotions and problems

  • The four stags eat from the leaves of Yggdrasill. The four allow Yggdrasil to continue, each stag is allowing counterbalance to the ever-eating serpent from below. At the highest realms they feed upon the branches and dense leaves they maintain and continue the growth of the tree. The branches, twigs, leaves and buds all must be manicured, this makes the tree achieve balance of receiving light and the upper realms rains that keep life in cycle. The leaves of Yggdrasil are seen as “Green clouds”, when the stags eat from them they tear the clouds to make winds.

  • Early suggestions for the four stags included connecting them with the elements, the four seasons, the phases of the moon or the four cardinal directions.
    • Dàinn is connected to: Earth, Spring, New moon and the North

  • Finnur Magnússon suggested that the stags represented winds. Based on an interpretation of their names, he took Dàinn (The Dead One) and Dvalinn (The Unconscious One) to be calm winds, and Duneyrr (Thundering in the Ear) and Duraþrór (Thriving Slumber, perhaps referencing snoring) to be heavy winds.
    • He represents the calm winds

  • Finnur Magnússon noted that dwarves control the winds and two of the stags named, Dàinn and Dvalinn, are also dwarf names as well.

  • Finnur Magnússon surmised that there was originally only one stag which had later been turned into four, probably one on each side.
