It all starts with a walk...

It's a beautiful day. You are taking a stroll through the local park. The sun warms the grass and the wind softly carries the leaves around you. You are taking the day off and you feel like you have all the time in the world, so you keep walking until you arrive to a less populated zone. You leave behind families and groups of friends in exchange for pleasant forest paths.
Suddenly, you notice there is a path that goes into the brushwood, diverging from the stonepath you're supposed to follow so you don't get lost. You feel particularly adventurous, so you take a few steps inside the forest and out of the path. Then a few more, making sure you don't forget where you came from. The trail takes you to what seems to be a small garden, some sort of private little hole. However, you immediately notice there's someone sitting in the middle of the scene. They stand up when they see you, and when they speak to you, you decide it will be nice to talk to someone.

"Oh, Hello." They say, clutching a sketchbook to their chest.
"Not a lot of people come to this part of the park. May I ask how you found this place?"

Just wandering around.

"I see." They say, lowering their sketchbook to their lap. "That's fair. If I'm honest, that's how I ended up here in the first place." They smile.
"We are both curious enough to have found this lovely place."

They look around, and you do too. You both take in the simple beauty of the garden. The slightly unkept vegetation and vivid flower bushes paint a rather dreamy landscape. It is a place where one is sure to come alone, or with someone close. The person in front of you is alone, and you wonder why.

So, why are you here all alone?

"Haha, I'm just drawing the objects I see around here." They say, turning to you and giving you a nervous smile. "It's my hobby. And I'm not bothered by being alone, I quite enjoy it."
They make a small pause, looking up to the sky with a raised eyebrow. "Even if sometimes I wish I could chat with someone."

You feel a little bad for this stranger. They do seem lonely, only with their backpack and pens as company. Enjoying quiet and solitude doesn't mean it's preferable all the time. But you do take in the fact that this place is a little too far away from the rest of the park. It is risky to venture alone into the woods.
So far, they have been very nice to you, even though you showed up on them. You decide that you want to be kind to them and go through your options. As noted before, you have free time, and you definitely feel like hanging out. However the danger of coming here alone is nagging you, and you feel like you should say something too. You make up your mind and say...

I can stay with you for a while.

"Oh, will you?" They lock eyes with you. Then they give you a soft smile.
"Thanks, I think I need the company."

They sit down on the place they had chosen before, and pat the floor for you to join them.
"My name is Pencil. What's yours?"

NORMAL ENDING

Pencil accepts to hang out and you get to know each other. Yay!

It's dangerous to be alone in such a remote place.

They tilt their head to the side, their eyes searching all over you.
"You might be right, but this is the only place like this I know." They look down, brushing a non-existent dust from their sketchbook. "It's so quiet and it inspires me a lot."
They look to the garden, taking in the view once more. But this time you get the feeling their eyes see far beyond from here. "I don't think there's any other spot where I could feel like this."

This has definitely gone out of your hands. In the blink of an eye, the mood has taken a gloomy turn. You don't know if it's true that they want to be alone, and you don't really care. You feel like somehow, today you two were lucky enough to find each other. That somber look in their eyes doesn't fit them as much as their warm smile, you think. You are not sure if you can give them something like this in any other place, but at least you can try. At least you can make sure they're not alone.

I'll show you some places. And we can go together.

They turn to you with their eyes as big as plates. There's a slight blush in their snout.
"Together?" They say, as if trying to find meaning to your words.
"Um, that sounds nice. Thank you." They try to smile in response to your considerate offer.
"My name is Pencil... By the way." They add, with a tone that's somewhat unsure.

BONUS ENDING?

Pencil accepts to go out with you, ever so confused by your advances.

Are you drawing something?

Their eyes seem to lit up a bit. "Yes, actually. You're also very observant." They smirk.
"For a couple of days now, I've wanted to try something different and draw outside. It's only my hobby, though." They shrug.
They seem to consider an idea, taking their sketchbook to their lips. It takes them a second before finally they extend their work for you to look.
"It's just the flowers..." They say quietly, their chin tilts down.

Who is to say you are a huge art critique? And who is to say you are not? You lean into the drawings, carefully observing the lines and splotches of ink that give depth to the portrayed foliage. Art sounds like a fun pastime, and you wonder if they have been into it for a long time.

Are you new at this?

They retrieve their sketchbook from your sigth and kneel down besides their backpack.
"Um, not really. I guess I'm not so serious about it as other people are." They concede, gathering their pens.
"I wish I could get better but I don't have the chance to practice all the time..." They start to put everything inside their bag, and then they stand up.
"Err, actually, I should get going. I have other things to do."

BAD ENDING

Pencil feels uncomfortable with the conversation and leaves.

I think it's great to be interested in art.

"Thank you, that's such a nice thing to say." They beam at you.
"Sometimes I feel a little bad about my skills, but then I remember just how fun it is to draw!"
They start to go on about art and why they like it so much. They seem very excited about it.

"Hey, um, do you come around here often?" They suddenly ask. "I could use a buddy while I'm in this secret place."
You think you would like that, you smile at them. But before you can answer they happily speak up again.
"And also, my name is Pencil! I'd like to know your name."

GOOD ENDING

Pencil likes you and they want to be your friend. Yay!

None of your business.

"I see." They say, lowering their sketchbook to their lap. But also lowering their eyebrows. "That's fair. I don't really care though." They speak with a strained tone.
"At least I'm kind of happy I'm not the only weirdo who got out of the path." They let out a tentative laugh.

They look away, seemingly having trouble to mantain eye contact, and you look away too. You don't really feel like telling just about anyone what are you up to. Specially strange people all alone in the forest, away from others. It raises your curiosity, so you have to ask.

So, why are you here all alone?

As soon as you say that, they start to pack up their stuff.
"I was just getting myself busy." They do say. "But I was about to take my leave. So good bye."

You watch them walk right past you and quickly abscond through the path you came from. Well, that was awkward.

BAD ENDING

Pencil feels uncomfortable and leaves.

What are you even doing out here?

They immediately shoot you a grim stare. Then they're quick to snatch their backpack and gather their stuff.
"And who the hell are you to ask?" They hiss.
"I came here to have peace and quiet, not to have someone nagging at me."

You hastily try to explain that it wasn't your intention to nag them, that you were just wondering what was going on with them out here in the forest. But you fail, because they are already walking past you and leaving.
"Stop talking to me right now. I don't want to be around a rude creep like you."

SUPER BAD ENDING

Pencil does not like you. :(
