"When the ashes start to rise, and the moon falls from the sky, will a thousand candles burn into the night, When the angels softly cry, on the plains below the sky, will a thousand souls still pray for you and I?"
After the death of his mother, a very young Shis-Wei made his way on the back of his families Alpaca to an address on a letter his mother had left him, and he found himself on the doorstep of his mother's old friend, a famous retired monster hunter. Master was not exactly thrilled that his old friend sent him her child, but he took Shis-Wei in nonetheless. Shis-Wei was very quiet and unresponsive to Master's attempts at conversation, but he took interest in Master's old weapons the man had once used to take down very powerful beasts. He asked Master to teach him to use the weapons, and after several weeks of prodding and begging, Master agreed to teach the boy. It was the first time he'd asked for anything and the first thing he showed any sort of interest in, after all. Who was he to refuse? Shis-Wei couldn't quite get the hang of wielding a weapon for quite some time, however, but he very much enjoyed learning and kept at it. For Shis-Wei's 14th birthday, Master gifted him with a custom short sword and an instrument that was made specifically to attract monsters. The instrument was a two string half-guitar shaped instrument and it sounded awful to human ears. Monsters, however, loved the sound and were very attracted to the sound. Shis-Wei and his master became close to that of a father and son, and Shis-Wei was rather content to have a very small world to live in, just Master and himself and the monsters he killed.
When Shis-Wei was 18, Master suddenly kicked him out, and told him not to come back until he'd taken down 50 monsters on his own, and to find a partner to fight with, to share his world, as well as his powers with. A familiar, if you will. So, Shis-Wei set off reluctantly on his own, on his Alpaca into the world. He made it to about 30 monsters before meeting Ross, a young blacksmith apprentice. She asked Shis-Wei to play his instrument, thinking he was a performer of some sort, but he refused. She pestered him until he finally gave in, telling her that she asked for it. Playing the instrument not only hurt everyone's ears but also summoned a monster that started ripping through the town. Shis-Wei attempted to take it down, but he wasn't used to fighting in such a crowded space like a city and was struggling until Ross stepped in and helped. After the beast was slain, the cities army began to approach, and Shis-Wei ran away, not really wanting to explain what just happened. As he left, he essentially kidnapped Ross and enlisted her to be his familiar. He shares his magic with her and the two travel around the country taking out monsters together. Shis-Wei originally was very shy and awkward with Ross, who was bold and outgoing and loud. They did manage to become friends, as they found they made a great team together. Shis-Wei even felt comfortable enough with her to go see his Master once they finally cleared the 50 monster quota. They arrived at home only to find that Master had gotten married and now had a toddler while Shis-Wei was gone. Seeing this, he felt as if he'd been somewhat abandoned by his only family. Ross managed to make him see that Master had simply expanded his family-- Herself, Master's new additions, they were all Shis-Wei's family. Family isn't just blood, after all.
