History: River spent quite a while traveling with her mother when she was young- while she herself wasn't a trainer in any official capacity, her mother was, and she "borrowed" her mothers team on more than one occasion, and got pretty comfortable with the idea. She actually captured several Pokémon herself before receiving Scarlet, her "official" starter.
While she is quite accustomed to traveling, she and her mother also returned often to their home in Couriway, where her other parent lives full-time. When River heard about the competition in the Aitema region, she couldn't pass up the chance. An opportunity to prove she could stand on her own two feet in a new place was exactly the kind of thing she wanted.
