Lore

Puffbums, or cotton cavies, are a rodent-like mammalian species, native to the colder tundra regions, but have since spread all over the map. Nicknamed after their signature big, puffy tails with their other noticing feature being their helmet-like bone-plate on their foreheads. They also sport sharp front claws used for digging.

Males sport horn-like protrusions on their boney forehead plates, while females are furrier. Their eyesight and hearing are not too keen. Instead, they use their whiskers and innate connection to Earth magic to ‘feel’ their way around their environment.

Behaviour

Puffbums don’t have much for self-protection and are more likely to flee from a predator than fight it. They may also bury themselves with only their tails sticking up to try and hide. For the most part, it works, and predators just see an odd cotton ball thing, while auri or smarter predators see right through the disguise. Puffbums will also bury themselves during hibernation which can lead to fields full of ‘cotton balls’.

Misc

Color-wise puffbums come in four different morphs; snow (white and the most common), merle (white with grey patterning), saddleback (russet with white stripe), and soot (black and the rarest). Curiously the tail is always white.

Puffbums are browsers and frequently move from feeding ground to feeding ground, meaning they don’t stick around to any one place long enough to become a nuisance. In fact, auri welcome their presence! Some find their tail meat to be quite a delicacy while others simply enjoy their cute looks and antics.
